Two men were arrested Tuesday night after a police officer in an unmarked car saw them engage in a high-speed car race on the Long Island Expressway service road in Holtsville, the Suffolk police said.

Joseph Sferazo, 19, of 90 Beech St. in Lake Grove, and Christopher DiBartolomeo, 24, of 25 Tree Road in Centereach, were charged with engaging in a speed contest, the police said.

Crime Section Officer Sal Camarda, while driving in an unmarked police car at around 8 p.m. Tuesday, saw Sferazo and DiBartolomeo racing each other westbound on Expressway Drive North in Holtsville, the police said.

The officer reported the two cars were going more than 80 miles per hour, with one vehicle in the left lane and the other the right.. The two cars started racing at the intersection of County Road 83 and ended at Nicolls Road.

After Sferazo and DiBartolomeo were arrested they were processed at the Sixth Precinct in Selden and received desk appearance tickets for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on August 30, 2007.

Both defendants' vehicles were impounded under Section 24-2006 of the Suffolk County Code.

I think this only shows the need for a safe environment for racers. Down the practice but promote the need for a track.Developers have made something legal, illegal, buy the practice of developing near tracks then complain them out of business, than developing that site win win for the greedy who don't give two shts about L.I. only their wallets. Most developers are just investors anyway.Ohhhhhhh not in my backyard how about we put MacAuthur airport in your yard an will put our race track their.Greater good over individual rights the #1 reason why America worked .in the first place.Look at us now a country divided over individual rights.NIMBY rule must end.

Isint there a dirt bike track over near the airport? Maybe that would be a good place for a drag strip.

Ok so I’m off to work this morning and the first thing I hear on the radio (WRCN) is this storey, but of course its police bust “Drag Racers” on the street. I called and stated that drag racing occurs on a drag strip and this was street racing and that LI needs a safe legal place where we can go Drag Racing

Not sure if you listen but the morning show consists of Double D, Jen and Rob. Double D felt this would still occur even if there was a track. Jen flat out didn’t want a track but I was pleasantly surprised that Rob (a young guy) knew about West Hampton, Islip and Bridge Hampton. He stated that LI needs a legal option. I’m sending off an email to the station now.

If anyone else is so inspired

DRAG RACING COMMENT. Individuals were illegally racing on public roads. Drag racing legally is a sport, please don't confuse the two. It gives participants of our sport a bad representation for those of us that obey the laws. A side note: there are no longer any drag strips left on long island. Our sport has been taken away by overdevelopment of Mc MANSIONS and STRIP MALLS. PLEASE SEE BELOW A POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVE FOR LONG ISLAND YOUTH.

POLICE SPONSORED RACING IN CALIFORNIA

It all started in 1994 when two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies who shared a passion for helping people and drag racing developed a community outreach program designed to deter drug abuse and gang involvement. From those humble beginnings, L.A.S.D. Motorsports has evolved into the largest law enforcement racing outreach team in the United States. Competing in nine different racing disciplines including NHRA Super Stock (3 cars); CIFCA Funny Car; SCCA Mazda; LeMans; Baja Off-Road Truck; Dirt Track; AMA Desert Motorcycles, MotoCross and Sportbike Racing the team now includes 22 deputies and 10 support personnel.

L.A.S.D. Motorsports – Motorcycle Racing, Inc. is the most recent addition to the team. L.A.S.D. Motorcycle Racing, Inc., is comprised of two distinct motorcycle racing entities. The Roadracing team consists of three deputies who race on 600cc motorcycles in WSMC, WERA, AFM and CCS series races across the Western United States. The 2006 calendar year shows this team competing in 21 races across the four western states in addition to performing approximately 190 appearance days. The Off-Road Racing team consists of five deputies who compete in AMA, SCORE, Best in the Desert and Whiplash events across the Western United States and Mexico. The 2006 calendar shows this team competing in 14 races in addition to performing approximately 160 appearance days.
