ah yes....the good ole days....well, without a whole heepa luck, might've been the bad ole days. 1981 or so, CR101, sunday nite at the races. flat out smoked whomever in their whatever with my '69 camaro. over sunrise to the 'turnaround', picked up the rest of the gang, and as we headed back towards mickey d's, the fool wanted another go at me. so, now weighed down with 3 more rearends inside, i wasn't to be made sport of. passed hospital road with the 140mph speedometer stuck to the right side as i passed this guy-again. and sure enough, wouldn't you know it, probably the grandfather of suicide's minivan driver pulled out of the side road. 69 camaro drag cars weren't known for their trans am road racing abilities, and the mere movement of the wheel induced one single 360 degree spin. at 140 mph. over about 1/8 mile. i think that was the inspiration for sanka in cool runnin's.....'yah ded mon'.....as i peered out my window at one of lilco's finest main power poles and an 18" curb. needless to say, at age 20, i learned a VERY VERY VERY valuable lesson. ALWAYS make sure ALL entrances to the street racing track are completely blocked til the racing is over.:violent1:

The only victams so far have been two racoons. People out east know the spots and know to stay away. Plus, there are no side streets for miles..

remember, i am talking almost 30 years ago. much of the racing then WAS in patchogue. if you wanted to step out of your league, you went to fountain ave in brooklyn, conduit ave near kennedy, even crooked hill road had some big dollar runs. we were just kids, with relatively fast-for the era-everyday drivers, with 10 guys trying to scrape up $100 for a race. heck, a 12.50 car at a street race here was fast. you'd sometimes get a bigmouth go-fast guy (in particular, a certain red 62-3-4-5-6-7 split window butcher job vette that WAS pretty quick) offer lengths to what they saw run 13's at westhampton in the afternoon, and when they got to 7-11 that nite, they'd change their tune. hmmmmmm, they thought, NOW i'm not so sure that car is NOT a whole bunch quicker then 13.70.....they'd ponder. DEFINITELY not the 'pro' street racers of the day. but then again, we weren't necessarily just a bunch of dumb kids. and when a certain 68 camaro appeared at the site ready to run, and we didn't SEE it drive up, we KNEW they were trying to out-scam us. again, we weren't just a bunch of dumb kids.....my oh my.... that sure sounds like herbie magee's fantastic voyage....it might not've hooked right up in a non-subframe-connected streeter, but 9 seconds of motor translated to faster then our 12. YUP, the good ole days. you took yourlumps and came back another day. no knives. no guns. no fulfilled death threats. all in good fun.
when at friendly's? weekends? any particular nites? if my 17 year old thinks he's gonna try....i'm gonna be there. the family that goes to jail together, stays together:sign5:

well, see, with boats, at the beach, you CAN have girls in bikinis 24 HOURS A DAY! just gotta know where to hang. with cars, they may LOOK GOOD, but they tend to be overdressed ;)
