Hi, I'm Al Diamanti and am working with Ken Granieri; we are/were both avid LI Motorsports participants and enthusiasts. We are working with the Port Jeff Arts Center to locate the people, and the photos, and other stuff for an Exhibit of the "History of Long Island Auto Racing", tentatively expected to open early Sept 2009.

We are currently working with Marty Heims for Stock Car Racing, Guy Frost for Road Racing, Howard Kroplick for Vanderbilt Cup Racing and the LI Racing of that era.

Would really appreciate your help to identify a LI Drag Racing guy that knows the history on the Island and maybe even someone who has a Vintage Dragster that ran at Westhampton or someplace?

Someone still active with old photos or trophies or or even a car that goes back to the 60's would be great!

I'm hoping you, or someone you know, and or a member of Long Island Drag Racing, knows a knowledgeable person who might have the history, photos and stuff for the History of Drag Racing on Long Island going back to the beginning, and forward thru the closing of Westhampton / National Speedway. We also need a person at the opening weekend of the show that can talk to people with questions.

Would appreciate if you could email me,

Thanks,
Al Diamanti

Al,

This is going to be a great expo. Racing was born on LI.

I posted this post on the www.348-409.com website under general car talk. There are LI members there that have raced at Islip, National and West Hampton.

Opening night should have Steve Levy and company to learn about the rich racing history on LI.

This is exactly what we need here to revive our sport.Check in with Marty at the LIMA board,he's Supershafts here I'm sure he knows people.
Would it be possible for us to set up a table for membership and maybe petition for support for a new facility to be built at your event.
While looking into our history is great for all of us,it would be nice if we could become a piece of history by bringing back a much needed facility for us and future generations to enjoy our sport in a legal and safe enviroment.
I wish you great success in your venture, and look foward to seeing it.

We have a post on LIMA in G.D. and 1 link so far to old pic's of national....
Right now im chasing pics of the actual builds of what i can, if i can...

As for the cars that raced at these tracks, I think we need to be specific about the needs...
Do you want a car that was famous at it's particular track?

I can come up with all kinds of actual period race cars that RACED at these tracks, but it might not be what you want....

That was why i asked in the IM/E-mail for specifics, i could get enough cars to leave you no room for anything else, I might be able to get a original start of the funny car era late 60's and possibly a early 70 flopper version.

Now i need to know how many spots and room you'll have available, Marty Himes, Guy Frost and Howard Kroplick have some amazing stuff and some of there friends own some unbelievable cars including authentic running Race Ready F-1 stuff....

I wouldn't want to take up places that those cars could have been in

A bit off topic here but it may be right. A while ago the mystery cruisers car club had a small meet at the corner of Titmus Drive and Montauk hwy in Mastic. Among the cars there was a IIRC flat head powered FED a sort of metallic blue in color. Old style recap slicks, the works. I'm sure somebody knows someone who knows somebody who could track down better information. Sometimes stufff like this pans out, othertimes, well ya know.
