Just another example of the misuse of the term drag race. I emailed Bill Mason the writer my displeasure on the term of drag race. I sent a read receipt, see what happens. The way terms are thrown around really does not help this sport at all.

Phil Burgess (the editor at National Dragster) says the media complaint(calling illegal street racing drag racing) is the most common thing he gets email about. I have sent links to newspaper folks from the NHRA web site (y'know that "what is a drag race?" thingie) and been ignored. It isn't an easy thing to fix.

I emailed the author of the Newsday article also.... News12 is playing it up as Drag racing also.

Wonder if we can get them on a slander charge or a deformation of character charge?

As members of the NHRA, I s'pose it is possible for some kind of way out there class action suit. Seems a little far fetched though....

In regards to your article 2 arrested in franklin square drag race.

What the two youths where doing was called ILLEGAL STREET RACING . DRAG RACING is a SPORT. Done under controlled conditions.
Maybe these kids would benefit from a LEGAL venue for drag racing or road racing .

Maybe you should try doing a story on why the government of suffolk, and nassau county are opposed to legal racing on a track.
Why is it other communities can see the benefits financial and otherwise of having a first class motorsports facility here on long island.DON'T BELIEVE ME, TAKE ALOOK WITH YOUR OWN EYES.

NEW JERSEY VERSION ,THAT GOT IT DONE.

LONG ISLANDS/REXCORPS VERSION THAT GOT POLITICALLY RAILROADED.

This is what i sent.....

What???? Drag Racing??? Please stop using the term so loosely!

I am a Drag Racer and wish everyone reporting on cars driving fast would stop using the term incorrectly as it makes the people that participate in the sport look bad.

Please read ----> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_racing

a drag race two vehicles go against each other over a straight, measured distance from a standing start. The standard distances are a quarter-mile (1,320 feet/402.3 m), 1000 feet (301.5m) (contested in the highest horsepower classes only), or an eighth-mile (660 feet/201 m). A standard drag racing event involves several classes, each competing in their own single-elimination tournament of head-to-head races.

This was his answer.....
Andy,
Thank you for your e-mail.
I am not a drag racing enthusiast, but I understand your unhappiness with the fact that the term used for your sport is the same as the term used for illegal street car racing.
However, the term "drag racing" as relates to two cars racing each other along a straight strip applies to both legal and illegal racing. It is possibly unfortunate that legal contemporary track racing founders decided to use the same term long associated with illegal racing for their sport, but their adoption of the term does not invalidate its earlier and current definition. Most recognized dictionaries such as "The American Heritage Dictionary" does not only use that term drag racing for sanctioned legal racing alone, nor do I believe the general public believes that term applies to sanctioned racing alone.
I suspect that the organizers of legitimate drag racing, chose to use that street known term in order to draw attention and notoriety to their sport in its formative years. If it no longer desires that association with its black sheep cousin, they should perhaps consider changing the name of their sport to one that does not included definitions that they no longer care for.

Bill Mason

This was my response back......

Thanks for replying to me. I understand you and point well taken! It's just that the legitimate Drag Racer gets a bad name from the few that race on the street. That is part of the reason that we can't get a track on LI cause people relate to us as the same people you report on racing in the streets.

Just wish the term Drag could be removed and just use street racing.

Anyway again thanks for answering me. I only wish that the news would report on all the positive things that the Drag Racing community does in the USA. Seems like we only get the negative things in the news.

I wrote this:
I would like to correct you on the term drag race. A drag race as defined by the NHRA is “A drag race is an acceleration contest, on a track, or dragstrip, that begins from a standing start between two vehicles over a measured distance. A drag racing event is a series of such two-vehicle, tournament-style eliminations. The losing racer in each contest is eliminated, and the winning racers progress until one remains.”

These two individuals were involved in a illegal speed contest as defined in their arrest by the Nassau County police not a drag race. This misuse of terminology does not benefit this sport. I along with others have been trying to bring a drag strip back to long island in order that people may have legal venue to race. We need to stop street racing because with something like this incident nothing good can come from it except for death and injury to the individuals or an innocent passerby. This example is another reason why we must give these people an alternative to go to. So in the future please do not use drag strip because true racers to do not condone this type of nonsense.

You know what I got back? NOTHING! So at least he responded to you

Hey everybody does this response seem familiar. I just got a response back to my email:

Mr. D'Alonzo,
Thank you for your e-mail.
I am not a drag racing enthusiast, but I understand your unhappiness with the fact that the term used for your sport is the same as the term used for illegal street car racing.
We use "The American Heritage Dictionary" and other established dictionaries to define the terms we use. While drag racing is the term used for your legitimate sport, it is also the term used for unsanctioned car duels on the street.
I suspect that the original organizers of legitimate drag racing, chose to use that street known term in order to draw attention and notoriety to their sport in its formative years. If it no longer desires that association with its black sheep cousin, the organizers should perhaps consider changing the name of their sport to one that does not included definitions that they no longer care to be associated with.
