Figured I'd share the day's events. I read about a MoPar meet at Atco. I said, it's a bit far, but what the hell, I'll go for a drive. Not havin a fast car ethier, I decided to take the daily scoot, the Duster (74) down and enjoy the day and hey, WTF, I might as well run the damn thing down the track as well. Why not?
I did want to do this for a base line anyway.

After a missed turn and a 3 hour drive, I sign up and I her them call class up to the line. All well, no cool down time.
The class was titled Pro Mopar No Electronics, 9.00 - 19.00. Cool, sounds like a run whatcha brung class to me.

FYI, Car/Engine back round check
1979, 318 dead stock except these parts;
Hooker headers into 2-1/2 Jegs exhaust
Edelbrock LD4B intake (Older dual plane, small 318 ports)
Carter 625 AFB Emissions carb
MoPar Performance distibutor
Crane cam, @ .050, 216/228 - .454/.480 on a 112
(New timing chain and matching springs of course)
904 tranny, stock
3.21 suregriped equiped rear, stock tires

I shut it off in the staging lanes. And that was a problem. I do believe the AFB started to suffer from the fuel boiling. It ran really bad after I started it back up and it fell flat on it's face on the first run.
(LORD I hate that)

So I just started it back up and floored it. At least I got to see where it shifted. 4,000. Way to low & soft.
LOL at the 23.659 run @ 80.

Second run with a 5,000 shift, 15.14 @ 89.65, 60 ft. 2.209.
Thrid run with a burn out and a more agressive pedal push on launch,
15.19 @88.84, 60 ft.2.212. A bit of tire spin. Same shift point.

I believe after a timing adjustment to get it in there and a carb adjustment, I'll see high 14's. :2215:

Met some really cool peoples and had a great day. Then again, what would you expect from a day with drag racers?

Nice... LOL at the 23 second run. ;-)

15.14 is close to 14's, with a bit of tuning I'm sure you can get there. I had a 'teen in my Duster that ran in the 13s, had close to the same cam as what you've got in that one.

Dig up a set of 273 adjustable rockers, a pinion snubber, and a shift kit, you'll put that 318 into the mid 14's,

Man I havnt heard AFB in 20 years! I would have fell over if ya said a Thermo Quad.
Strap an EDDy 1406 on it and go rich one set of needles.. 14.49. easy!

The current carb is a Carter made by Fed-Mogual cast by Webber. Same as Edelbrock. Just older. The model is a 625 Emissions carb with MoPar linkage. So it is fairly old but works very well.

I need to get some room under the hood for a thicker gasket like the OE carb gasket. Thick @ like a 1/4 inch and heat insulating. The air cleaner now rubs the hood insulation a bit.

No need for a snubber yet. I think this engine is making a whopppppin 260 HP at best.

But a shift kit. YES! Would love an easy to install set up that'll firm up them shifts.

It is to bad that first run I made was right after I arrived there and the carb got to hot and boiled fuel away. I would liked to have riched it up a tad and see what that got me.

Well, if I have some spare dollors, theres next weekend. Only this time, it'll be E-town or Island. Haven't ever been to Island.

It should out run the Duster. The only advantages I have are not actually taken advantage of, yet. The modern cars have every other advantage I have to pay for.

From top to bottom;

Fuel injection
Supeior induction
Computer controled set up
Roller cam and valve train
Sometimes multi valve heads, but your heads should be better in the arena.
Multi speed trans (more than 3 foward) with over drive.

Understand where my Duster begins. Swap a /6 for a '79 318. The 318 is a low compresion (Below 8.0-1) small valve people mover designed for as many miles as possible. I'll show you records from the OE owner where he stopped recording in 1989 with over 300,000 miles. He then gave it to his daughter for 4 years of collage in upstate New York and home every weekend. Then his son got it for the same thing. Lord knows where they drove.

He then used the car for an everyday driver from Babylon to Jamaica Queens where his job as a fireman was located. That lasted apprx. 10 years accroding to him. (60+ mile round trip)

How many miles do we have now? I picked up the car 2 years ago.

All I did was tear it down, mike it up and gave it new cam bearings. I needed an oil pump, but didn't get to it, all else was decent at best.

The cars weight as listed on the reggie is 2830 or something like that. The 318 is no heavier than the /6 and is made lighter with aluminum and aftermarket aluminum.

Alittle tune and tweak she'll be in the high 14's.
I'd like to up the comp ratio with a rebuild of the shortblock with KB zero deck slugs. That would help alot.
