Bluebaugh Goes to the Finals in Bakersfield, Qualifies Number One

Bluebaugh Racing’s Team AutoTrader scrambled to make it to the West Coast Hot Rod Associations (WCHRA) Holders Nationals at the Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield June 7-8, 2008 on last minute notice. Bluebaugh received a call late Sunday the week prior from Tom Nelson of Team Performance Products, Inc. requesting attendance for the event and all remaining events for the WCHRA season. A decision was made to load up the AutoTrader Monte Carlo and head for Bakersfield after some negotiations with Nelson who sponsored the team last year.

Crew Chief Deborah Woodard, said this is very exciting for us as we have run some of our fastest passes in Bakersfield, which is primarily home for the WCHRA. It proved to be great weekend. We qualified the AutoTrader Monte Carlo in the number one position with the first pass off the trailer. Bluebaugh ran short of the finish line with a 6.55 @ 212.46 mph on a soft tune up, which held good through the qualifying day. Woodard said, we have been working hard to maintain consistency with getting this car down the track. Being able to get it right on the first run just really indicates that we are headed in the right direction.

In round one, the team faced Dan Myers in his Blown Alcohol Chevy Truck. Myers snuck into the WCHRA event late after winning the West Coast Pro Mod event in Sacramento the night before looking for quick cash on his way home. Bluebaugh and Team AutoTrader were not about to let him have his way. Bluebaugh took Meyers off the line and never looked back running a smooth and consistent 6.54 @ 216.91 to Myers 7.963 @ 142.72 mph.

In the final round, Bluebaugh faced Tim Henry in his Con-quest Concrete sponsored Firebird. It was a battle of Nitrous cars for the win on a very hot 140 degree track. Both lanes appeared equal as Woodard contemplated which lane might prove best for the AutoTrader Monte Carlo. Henry, who is fairly new on the scene proved razor sharp off the line putting a hole shot on Bluebaugh ultimately costing Team AutoTrader the win. Both cars struggled with the hot track on the big end. Bluebaugh said, I was right there, the tires would hook and then spin causing the back end of the AutoTrader Monte Carlo to sashay just a bit. Henry commented that he too got slightly out of the groove and had a struggle to pull his Conquest-Concrete Firebird straight. It was neck and neck in the finish with Henry taking the win by a very narrow .0266 with a 6.598 at 213.87 mph to Bluebaugh’s quicker but losing 6.590 @ 216.76 mph.

Nice stuff. What do you think about making our local cause a national one.Preserving race tracks everywhere and restoring them where they have been chased out by over development. It appears to me that the major sanctioning bodies of the sport really don't care about the smaller venues. But in my mind without the smaller venues the large ones will eventually fall to same pressure from civic groups and the like.We need a place for the racers to have a voice,to link our local sites to one on a national level so we all can support by pressuring the governments in the areas where it's needed with petitions. In NUMBERS THERE'S POWER,WITH POWER SOLUTIONS.
P.S. Welcome to our show.:hello:

I like your idea of having a national voice. The idea can be much larger in that the grass roots racer, the little guy who pays the bill, can have a voice. A voice in preserving tracks, a voice in preserving our heritage and the culture of drag racing as it was originally formed, a voice in knocking down big business that has over taken our sport making it a commercial venue privledging an elite few. We could form a grass roots drag racing association that would grow to have such political power. The major sanctioning bodies will have to care if we all got together and said something. As far as linking webs sites- you simply form a new web site and then market it as a new national association asking forum members from diverse sites to join. We would probably have to make a corporation out of the association Deborah-WFO

A while back brought up the idea of a local level group to get people together from all forms of motorsports to make it a one voice organization. The name I came up with was S.M.A.R.T. on Long Island which stands for Supporters of Motorsports and Race Tracks on L.I..It never got wings, but we now have L.I.M.A.,which is Long Island Motorsports Assoc..The SMART concept might work well for a national level site like SMART America or SMART USA.The main body of LIMA and LI DragRacing.com are very dedicated to getting the word out and are the real fighting voice for our efforts here.As with life all of us have to work for a living and these days time is limited to get things done. Many times the local politicians being politicians will schedule meetings during the day just so you loose a days pay to attend and the support base here has been beaten down and many don't believe anything can be done but all are for it.This is something I'll never understand and I hope the rest of America still has some fight left in it.We need to get in front of cameras on shows like Pinks,Pass Time go to major events and put flyers on windshields. When it comes to flyers here on LI we LIMA and LIDragRacing.com have handed out thousands I gave out 1,000 a week last summer and I'm small patates compared to others here. All were phyced to the idea but if you look at our membership ooh well. All they needed to do was go online and signup easy enough. The numbers is what you need then a couple of people can represent the many, just like the civic assoc. that shut us down and most of them are a hunderd at best.I hope the rest of America sees the logic to be organized.:poke:

I think getting a few to act and getting the media will be the easy part. It is amazing though how difficult it is to get the masses to respond. In order to get the masses to move, there has to be something in it for them that drives them to action. It is ashame, but I have seen petitions on line where people could sign with a click of a button. So why do they not do this? I think you have to provoke emotion, tie the issue to how it hits close to home, people also need to believe they can win the battle and that they have a voice that actually counts. They also have to believe it is the value and expected duty or norm. The same principles stand behind why people do not vote. There is an attitude of feeling helpless and apathy to the issues. In it the value is lost

Consider in this national organization, that I live in Arizona. We are not having problems here with tracks being closed. So its hard for me to comprehend and feel passion about this problem in Long Island becasue it is so far removed from my everyday busy life. Besides, most well believe that would never happen here............... This is why people do not move to action. So how can you provoke my interest, my passion, my sense of urgency, and make it hit close to home for me? This is the question to be resolved. As you discovered, people do not have enough passion and belief to take a day off work, a day away from family, a moment away from themselves.
I think there needs to be an examination of the culture of our target audience. What are the values, morals, and desires of our hopeful participants? What drives and motivates them? Once we discover and capture this, we have to tap into it. So the movement becomes a sub-culture of willing members and followers

Rather than a SMART program, as I am sorry to say it sounds like another oppressive government curriculum, you need something that sounds rather underground, cool, popular, the in thing or place to belong. You have to frame it around the passion of the culture according to the cultures definition. Then you implant your goals and ojectives as a seeming secondary related cause.
