View Full Version : Can't get the pipe out

I've got an intake that has a piece of pipe sticking out of one of the fittings. The pipe has to come out cuz I need to plug that hole. I can't get the thing out... I've tried vice grips, PB, WD-40, internal pipe wrenches, easy outs. It just won't budge.

Any suggestions?

Well this is not a fun thing.:violent1: We go through this all the time especially with the snow equipment. Really can test one's patience. Two possible solutions: 1. If it is not that big of a fitting buy an easy out and that should do the trick, again just soak fittings with PB (I find that works the best), or 2. If it is a larger fitting try cutting it with a saw blade and then work a chisel to split it into pieces. Be careful not to mangle the threads. This is definitely not fun but can be done with some time and a few well place expletives.

It's not that big, it's like 1 inch diameter and maybe 4 inches long. You can see it in this pic, it's under the water neck:

I tried an easy out that's made for removing pipe nipples, that just slipped around in it. I have a internal pipe wrench, that turned and turned, got tighter and tighter and then slipped. I soaked it with PB and let it sit, I'll hit it again in the morning and see what happens.

I agree with that myself, and Andy is correct do not heat the pipe otherwise it will expand and become tighter in the manifold. That should do the trick otherwise crack open the Supmante that is next to the manifold.

Now wait a min. I'm thinking, that aluminum heats up faster than steel/iron and would make it easier to exract since the aluminum will expand faster than the pipe and of course, will not see the heat first.

I'll give that a try, too.

Yes the aluminum steel combo is always a pain. Careful with the heat on aluminum, it heats/cools quickly. Does it still have a hex head near the base? You could six point it out. (wrench or socket depending on what you have handy) That usually requires being able to hold the manifold still while trying to turn it though. Not always an easy task. If you have a "floor" drill press, as a last resort, you could try drilling it out. You would have the same work holding issues though.

No, there's no head on the pipe.

I think I've given up on getting it out, now I'm looking for a rubber cap to go over it. That's just as hard as getting the pipe out, though...

If you can get some "aerokroil" its a penatrating oil that is the best. I sprayed it in the cylinders of a seized big block and 2 hours later the motor turned like butter.

Try this drill a hole thru the pipe in an area so you can give it some love taps.Take a hardened bolt long enough to go thru both holes with enough thread to nut it both sides and an area to wack.Heat it good around the aluminum and tap the bolt.If you get about a quarter turn it should come out with a wrench after that as pipe threads are tapered.Good luck.Don't forget boys and girls to use antisieze compound when threading steel into aluminum.Spark plugs too.

How did we make out with the pipe?

I gave up. I found a cap for it and am just gonna go with that instead of trying to wrench the pipe out.

Check it out... look at what the arrow is pointing at.

Yes, that's the rubber thing from the bottom of a crutch. Fits perfectly. ;-)

End of the crutch, the rubber cap.
