The guy who's working on my heads has told me this so far...
"The intake ports are different sizes"
"Why was the boss totally removed on only 2 intake ports?"
"The deck and intake surfaces look like someone cut them with a wood chipper or a chain saw"
:(
The good thing is he said he can fix all of that, plus do all sorts of porting, for the price that we originally talked about.

LOL... Here's one more:
"I managed to get the valves cleaned and found that 2 intakes were starting to pit and 1 intake was previously bent, along with 1 exh. valve that was starting to pit"

I feel like I was having an outer body experience when I read your posting. I am going through the same thing with my heads. My problem is that who ever did these heads in the 80's would be considered a butcher in todays world. Hoged out areas that should not have been, valve seats hanging on by a thread, just to name a few. Fortunately same thing my guy can save the patient with not that much more in cost.:D

Well, I did it for 2 reasons:
1. I'm cheap.
2. I already had the heads.
I was looking at going with some aluminum heads instead of re-working these, but these already flow better than the Edelbrocks do, so I'd have to lay out $1500 for the E-heads then another few hundred to get them up to the performance of these. By just spending a few hundred on the ones I already had I save myself a large chunk of change. :headbang:

Same thing with mine... Have a look at the 2 intake ports on the right side. WTF?
My only thought about the ports being different is perhaps despite their differences they flowed the same. I bought a book about modifying heads by Dave Vizard probably 15 years ago. In it he covered stuff like that.
Then again, I "inherited" a set of heads years ago and when I disassembled them, I discovered all sorts of mismatched parts, ports, and whatnot. The guy I got them from assured me of thier origin and I was pretty surprised at the work. (in a not so good way). I'm with cowbay though, I think what was "the way" then, isn't anymore.

The guy I bought these heads from said that they were "experimental" heads... and it looks like somebody may have been experimenting on them but never finished. Or maybe they had read that book, too. ;-)
The two different sized ports don't flow the same:
lift......Big Int....Small Int.
.100.......76............76
.200......125..........117
.300......195..........181
.400......229..........218
.500......246..........242
.600......248..........241
Not a huge difference, but still a difference. The exhaust ports are all the same sizes:
lift..........Exh.
.100.......70
.200......103
.300......129
.400......145
.500......154
.600......151
He's gonna flow them again after working on the intake ports, hopefully those numbers will improve.

Those Are Some Funky Ports If I Am Seeing Them Rite
Try Dropping The Jet Size Atleast One Or Two Sizes
It Looks Like There Might Be Some Rust On The Ex. Seat On The End
A Super Stocker Taught Me (i Lve Close To The Water) As Soon As You Put It On The Trailer Shove Rags With Wd-40 Up In The Header
I Had The Same Problem With Rusty Seats Never Happend Again
They Come Right Out As Soon As You Start It

The head guy is taking care of all of that... cleaning up the seats, the ports, the valves, etc.
