View Full Version : Show cars versus go cars
I recently was talking to a life long buddy of mine, who has a real slick 34 Ford show car.I got to asking him why his club never came aboard as to the benefits of the site(post events free, know what's going on).He told me they weren't interested in racing just showing. Some of these cars one in particular, now under construction, have engines 800+hp,why build a motor to look at and do the occasional burn out.Give me a car with rust on it that will do consistant 10's that's my style the function junction. Is this mind set part of the problem, show over go.My wife who in no way is a fan told guys at a car show she thought it was boring to just look at cars sitting still wouldn't you guys rather race them. They looked like deer in the headlights and were dumbfounded to give her an answer. To this she looked at me and said what a waste of money lets go I'm bored. You should have seen how many chins hit the chest on that statement, the look of punished children, what a women she scares me out of my pants.:D

Even if they are only about shows you should push the fact that if the Rexcorp proposal goes through they will have a huge brand new place to have all the car shows they want. They they can sit in a parkinglot waste there lives looking at other 800+ hp cars that never go over 55 mph, and if they want wqalk over to the track and watch some racing. If they are car people I find it hard tyo believe that they don't at least watch some form of auto racing.

I understand where you're coming from and I understand where they're coming from. I've been part of the show car crowd, built a couple 500+hp motors that never saw a track. Collected my trophies and placed them on a shelf in my garage. I never had the desire to run one of my cars.
Now I have spent the last few years modding my SS and I would love to take it to a track. Its not a fast car, its fast for what it is. By spring I should have a 12 sec, V6, FWD family sedan. Thats pretty damn good for a daily driven grocery getter.
I dont watch racing on TV very often. I watch Daytona every year, I have a favorite driver, well, more or less a favorite car / sponsor.
Im into cars. Thats why I try to support you guys when ever possible. If we had a local track, Id take the car for a run or two. But I wouldnt be there every weekend waiting for my turn. So now I have been on both sides of the fence.

I agree with Tmac. The funny part is my wife is no great auto fan. Taking her to a car show is pure torture. Going to the car show and hearing what type of wax someone uses does not really strike her fancy. But believe or not she has a good time at the track. Not only is the runs everyone makes but we barbecue and she really enjoys the element of competition. She is very competitive being that she is a competitive figure skating coach. (not to drop names she coached one student for 10 years who latter went on to win a gold medal in 2002 and she was from long island) To cap it all of she was never been to any auto event before she met me and had no interest at all. To sum it up this sport could be much bigger if people would just open up their closed minds.:3gears:
I usually go to Etown for the nats every year.My buddy and I watch the racing while the other guys walk the pits looking at cars, even when the big boys are running. They have some heavy hitters in their club.As far as filling them in on Epcal and all we've been doing I sent their club 100 copies of everything I hand out they know.Cowboy I can relate I used to go to LID almost every Sunday with my kids when they were small sit spectator side on the end with my little coal barbeque when they grew up I ride my bike out alone sit pit side just relax and enjoy for a few hours.I work in NYC 6 days a week 4 hrs commute daily so the idea of going 2or3 hrs to relax and enjoy well you get the picture. The thrill is gone but I'm doing what I can to bring it back. But I still don't get building a high hp motor to look at why not just make a cheap faux engine that looks good, put the money into glamour parts.

I will never understand the thought of building it to look like it's fast and never EVER use it fast... So basically all these car show guy's are nothing more then the american version of the import crowd with all there posing stickers and looooooks
Never thought, when i see cars parked i think there out there just because they have no where to go with them so they go and park at a parking lot and have a parked car show...
Why they do what tmac said is beyond all rational thought...get a blown up TF block get some blown up TF heads and then buy a nice al oil pan and nice al valve covers and a blown up blower and now you got a 3000 hp looking motor...who the hell cares if it runs or not if all your gonna do is park a lawn chair next to it....it's like having a cool BBQ, but you don't want to use it...wth..
However they could have indoor shows at epcal and outdoor shows with a facility that has more room then any other parking lot they attend now...
Why there to lazy to get with us and do something though is also beyond any thought i could come up with
Me personally, I build my car to use it (abuse it).
I think its much better now then during the hey days of Pro Street when you would have a shiny chromed out blower, but they wouldn’t have pistons in the motor cause they would never run them (wouldn’t want to blue that chrome)
I’m broke so I can’t do it, but you see some cars at the strip that are nicer then any show queen

Yeah very true, lately lots of cars are perfect nowadays
But nothing beats the guy struggling to support his race effort pulling his 68 camaro in primer with home made glass on the cheap all the way to the line against a high dollar tricked out rod and spanking him by two cars through the traps.Ingenuity meets money and blows his doors off,you can't beat it with a stick. There is no other sport in the world where this sht could happen, this is probably in my eyes the greatest thing about racing:3gears::violent1:
Maybe that's why I like brackets. I can't out spend you, but I can cut your heart out on the tree and know how to play the game on the big end...

LOL... I love doing that!
I run my beat up Duster in Super once in a while, my $5k car is up against dragsters with $25k motors in 'em. They chase me down and usually wind up breaking out.

Im the same way. Coming from a L.I based truck club. Everybody builds these trucks with 10's of thousands of dollars invested in it to sit in a field of other trucks built the same way, to hopfully one day be in some magazine. If you look at my avatar of the left thats my truck, yeah its got the hood up and its somewhat shiny becusue being the v.p of the club you gotta kinda play both sides. Little does everyone know the motor, trans, rear, and some other things that may be announced are worth more than the piece of crap i put it in. hell we even got a kid in the club that must have spent 25,000 of a 1st s10 pickup that has a 11 second motor in it, you know where it is? in a garage waiting for show season. ok ive vented...lol just my 2 cents.

I have to agree with that. That is why bracket racing can be so good. Last year at E-town there was a couple of guys with at least 35K-40k put into their car. It was a turn key big block etc. Make a long story short their trailer was next to mine and a couple of smart comments came out of their mouths "such as I would be scared to drive a car like that" and yada yada. :sign5: Look I admit it my car is not by any imagination the fastest out there. It is essentially a mildly worked 327 I built in 82' with over 140,000 on the rebuild. Look my big performance upgrade last year was going to electronic igniton. But hey I have fun with the car I drive it, it is not a trailer queen. Well to the point when eliminations came they were out in the first round and loaded up and went home while I went to the quarter finals that day. And that is why I love Bracket Racing!!!!!

This may be tha last time this year hope the weather holds.

Well, once a year will never do. If I did that my car would not talk to me. See she likes going down the track, and if i don't take her she will act up on me. So by hook or by crook but mostly on the trailer towed to the track I will go as often as I can. Its just a shame cause if we had something local then I could go almost every weekend and my car would be even happier, which would make me very happy.
Well I go as much as I can too, but with a brand new 4 month old baby, the track kinda takes a back seat because it is so far from me. If we had a track closer i'd still be able to go race.

funny you shouild mention this....i go to various parking lots on long island...commack..mineola and whitestone....i can pull in with my 60 nova...and enjoy about an hour and a half...and thats it...how these people...can go with their car...take out a chair..and sit there for hours on end..is beyond me..after ive had enough ill take it for a ride...i find that more entertaining...but give me a drag strip anyday...i can spend teh whole day there..with my car...enjoying the sights sounds and racing .....the nova was built to race and drive...not sit....
