Anybody have any suggestions about how to make this site better?

I have somebody working on a skin for the site so it'll look nicer. I was thinking about adding some stuff... a photo gallery maybe, a timeslip database. Any other ideas?

Hey Mike,
Can site be used to write mailers or event postings which can be down loaded to be copied for distribution?

mikelbeck

Absolutely. I can send out a mass-email (or private message) to all the users on the site. I can also create a forum for posting of event flyers or whatever for people to download.

Good idea. There's a calendar (up on the top menu bar), I can add local club events/shows to it. Anybody have any of that info? Send it along to me and I'll add it to the calendar.

Mike ,Fordboy's letter for EPCAL is great.Could it be arranged to be down loaded? If so I could print it make a couple thousand copies and start distributing it to the local vendors in my area and would suggest if others could do the same we could get the word out.I can cover Patchogue and some of Medford. The only place that wouldn't let me leave mailings was Aid Auto.Maybe they would accept this one not being political in nature.I'll try again. Make sure Susan Herds address is on it and you might want to put the site address too.

Just another thought.Maybe another letter to Levy asking him to publicly give his support for the Rexcorp.plan.His formal support can carry weight. In politics one hand washes the other.

If we could scare the uppercrust into thinking we would join with the Shinecock Nation and have a deal with them to build a strip on there reservation they would build a track for us for free just so our kind doesn't bring down their standard of living!Who's standards have really been changed anyway. They would like us to dry up and blow away, but thats their job.
Websters dictionary definition of upper crust:The outer skin formed on manure after drying in hot sun.You see what I mean, eventually their dust and we're the strong wind to blow them away. What you win at the track drop at the casino.Take back our Island!!

Shinnecocks, town clash over gambling casino

July 29, 2004
BY MITCHELL FREEDMAN
STAFF WRITER

The Shinnecock Nation clashed with Southampton's town board Tuesday night as a tribal delegation from the Indian reservation told the town board that it was wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars opposing a proposed tribal gambling casino in Hampton Bays.

A half dozen members of the tribe accused the board of continuing the exploitation of the tribe which they say has gone on for centuries, by denying it the right to use its own property.

Meanwhile the tribe's attorney, George Stankevich, said the town board was wasting its efforts, because state-sponsored gambling -- through a casino, a super OTB parlor or video slots in restaurants -- was an inevitability.

Randy King, a Shinnecock Tribal Trustee, said the tribe was criticized when it tried to clear land for a bingo parlor, but no one complained when thousands of trees were leveled in preparation for the U.S. Open parking areas and on-site facilities last month. And, he added, even as the town opposes the tribal casino "I see casino nights all over as fund-raisers."

Supervisor Patrick Heaney said the town would continue to block a tribal casino because of the traffic problems it would bring and the social destruction gambling would cause.

"It's a parasitic industry," Heaney said. "Decency gets sucked out of the community. You see bankruptcies increase, drug addiction increase ... A lot of bad, nasty things come into a community as decency gets sucked out."

Stankevich, however, told the board at its regular Tuesday night meeting that the town would lose in the end. "This is a gaming state. It's public policy," he said. "That sucking sound you hear is billions of dollars [in casino revenue] going to Connecticut and New Jersey."

What brought the tribal delegation to the town board meeting was a routine budget transfer resolution, which moved $100,000 to the town attorney's office to pay some of the cost of the town's lawsuit to block the casino.

Rumors had spread around the town that the transfer had brought the cost of fighting the casino to $1 million -- Heaney said he had gotten an e-mail to that effect himself -- and Stankevich said it was time for the town to stop and review its position.

Heaney later checked and found the town had spent $582,000 in its legal battle so far.

Donna Collins of the Shinnecock Tribal Council said that white people had been taking land from the tribe for centuries. "It's time for you to give back ... Your ancestors took and took," she said. "This board may not have the power to do everything, but you can do something. If you don't want a casino, what are you going to give us?" she asked.

Heaney said he and others on the town board had visited two casinos to see their impact on the local community, but Lance Gumbs, the tribal board chairman, said there were 310 Indian casinos in the United States, and that it would be unfair to compare the proposed Shinnecock casino with Foxwoods, the largest in the country.

"Fire departments have been funded by those 'bloodsucking' entities," Gumbs said. "And ambulances and hospitals with gaming revenues. Most casinos have built new schools ... how will we be able to take care of our seniors and help our children? ... Before you pass these judgments, you should get the real facts."

JULY 2007
More Casino Cash

The Town Board allocated another half million dollars on Tuesday to continue Southampton's fight against the development of a Shinnecock Indian casino. The town has now spent close to $1 million on the legal battle.

The money will pay the Boston firm of Nixon Peabody to continue to challenge the Shinnecocks' effort to build a casino. It will also be used to pay other firms that have been researching the history of the tribe. The money is being allocated from a special fund created for the casino court case out of the town's surplus.

Why is Indian gaming being considered by the Shinnecock Indian Nation?

Throughout the country, tribal government gaming is working for Indians and non-Indians.Indian gaming facilities operating in 29 states (three in New York) employ over 300,000 people, while providing much needed funds to Indian tribes for education, housing, health care, clean water and other basic services. Gaming has helped Indian nations gain control of their own futures. It’s simple; Indian gaming works and that’s why the Nation is strongly considering opening a gaming facility. Gaming would help provide resources that we need to maintain our tribal lands, preserve our culture, educate our children, and eliminate the need for state and federal assistance.

http://www.indiangaming.org/

How will the profits from a casino benefit the members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation?

Profits from Indian gaming can make a dramatic difference in a tribe’s abilityto care for itself and its future. Homes, health care and education are the immediate concerns for the Nation. We will use the revenues from economic development to improve our senior and youth center, repair damage to our cemetery, create a tribal police force to monitor our beaches, reopen the oyster project, open a day care center, and provide resources for our children so that they can receive a sound education. In fact, according to research conducted by Montana State University, the most frequent use of Indian gaming money is for tribal education so any member who desires to attend college can do so.

You mentioned that profits would be used for helping the Shinnecock Indian Nation. But how will the external community benefit?

In our region, gaming would support year round jobs and could generate millions of dollars in economic activity. It’s a fact that tribes in other parts of the country contribute billions of dollars annually to state economies, employ both Indians and non-Indians and spend millions of dollars on goods and services. In locations similar to our region, Indian gaming governments have partnered with local officials to provide revenue for public services such as sewer, roads and fire and police protection. The bottom line, everyone wins.

The Shinnecock Indian Nation is a good neighbor; we’ve been that way for over 400 years. If successful, we want to help the community. National data indicate that Tribal gaming enterprises tend to give more to charities than do non-Indian gaming enterprises.

Some people feel that crime comes along with gambling. What assurances do I have that a Shinnecock facility would be regulated?

Indian gaming is the most highly regulated type of gaming in the country. It is regulated at the tribal, state and federal level with Indian nations as the primary regulators. As an example, the Director of Connecticut’s Office of Policy and Management stated that crimes in general (and organized crime in particular) are not problems at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods. (Source: The News Review, May 29, 2003) As part of our process, we’ve created a five member Gaming Authority to explore all aspects of running and monitoring gambling activities. Additionally, the state police, FBI and the IRS can enforce most of their laws. For example, federal law makes it a crime punishable up to ten years in prison to steal, cheat or embezzle from an Indian gaming operation, and the FBI enforces that law. And should we move forward, we will have the highest level of security, an age limit and, at least initially, there will be no alcohol in the facility.

Does the Shinnecock Indian Nation need federal recognition to open a casino?

We believe the issue of federal recognition is a distracting legal argument used to prevent our economic independence. The United States Supreme Court ruled that gaming is a matter of civil law, to be governed by individual Indian nations. The Nation has been recognized by the state of New York as an independent, self-governing nation for centuries. This historic, diplomatic arrangement provides the foundation for the Nation to govern and conduct gaming on our tribal lands.

I’m concerned about the environment. Will it be protected if you decide to open a casino?

Caring for Mother Earth is fundamental to the Nation. We’ve been stewards of the land for 10,000 years and we will continue that way for 10,000 more. Any plans for a gaming facility would be limited in scope and located only on our tribal land. In a recent interview, a Shinnecock Trustee stated, "Have we ever, in the history of being here on Long Island, done anything against nature? Never. We are a people of the earth…” (Source: East Hampton Star, June 5th, 2003)

I’m worried that a casino will look like the type we see in Atlantic City.

Any gaming facility would be tastefully developed to fit our natural surroundings. It would be no taller or bigger than anything that already exists in the Hamptons. As stewards of the land, we will continue to respect and protect the earth. Regardless of location, we anticipate setting aside large areas of open space.

Traffic is a big problem in our region. Won’t this add more traffic congestion? (N.I.M.B.Y.'S AT IT AGAIN)

Any Indian gaming facility would be part of the traffic solution, not part of the problem. Traffic has been an issue on the East End ever since farms were turned into subdivisions. If we decide to open an Indian gaming casino, keeping traffic congestion away from residential streets is a top priority. Most important, any development projects we undertake will be mindful of our neighbors’ concerns, and will likely result in infrastructure upgrades on roads to tribal lands.

What about other options for generating income?

AThe Shinnecock Indian Nation has tried all types of economic development, but generating income has been limited. The Oyster Hatchery was probably our most successful venture until the brown tide closed it down. Other ventures have been explored, such as windmill electricity generation, cell tower, waste management and more. Gaming is our best prospect for reaching true self-reliance.

I’ve read that Indian nations do not pay taxes and that revenue generated in a casino won’t help the community.

Although the members of the Nation come first, Indian gaming will save taxpayers millions each year in reduced state assistance programs that we currently depend upon. That money could be used for other local services to help reduce our local and/or state budget. Customers at Indian casinos also will pay taxes on their winnings; that’s the law. As well, all of the tribal casino employees, who are not members of the Nation, will pay state and federal income taxes on their wages. That’s important because statistics show that 70 percent of the jobs created by Indian gaming go to non-Indians. Why? There are more jobs available than tribes can fill through their own membership.

It’s important to understand that just as the state government does not pay taxes on state lottery revenues, Indian tribal governments do not pay taxes on the revenues from tribal gaming facilities. This is because most of the revenues are used for tribal government operations and for the general welfare of Indian nations and its members.

Drawbridge mentality

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Drawbridge mentality describes the attitude of those people who migrate to more exclusive or more "unspoiled" communities and thereafter campaign to preserve the tranquility of that community by opposing further inward migration by people or businesses and, possibly, any development or refurbishment, including plans put forward by those already located there.

The term can imply a selfish attitude.

NIMBY

NIMBY (an acronym of Not InMyBack Yard ) describes the phenomenon in which residents designate a development as inappropriate or unwanted for their local area, even if the development is clearly a benefit for many.

NIMBY and its derivative terms NIMBYism ,NIMBYs , and NIMBYists , refer implicitly to debates of development generally or a specific case, and as such their use is inherently contentious.

NIABY

Opposition to certain developments as inappropriate anywhere in the world is characterised by the acronym NIABY (Not InAnyone's Back Yard ). The building of nuclear power plants , for example, is often subject to NIABY concerns.

Also used: NOTE (Not Over There Either ).

BANANA

BANANA (an acronym of Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything or possibly Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone ) is a term most often used to criticize the ongoing opposition of certain interest groups to land development .

The apparent opposition of some activists to every instance of proposed development suggests that they seek a complete absence of new growth. Compare with acronym NIMBY , which describes development stymied by those who do not want the development in "their backyard".

Ok... I can do this.

Does anybody use the "portal" page? The front page you get when you go to http://www.lidragracing.com? I can replace that with an explanation of what it's all about.

As for the car show calendar, there's already a calendar that has information about things that are going on:

Also, down at the bottom of the main forum page there's a section that has "what's going on" which lists the events from the calendar (see the attached image).

Two lane highway, a camaro in one lane and a mustang in the other waiting for the light. The sun rising in the horizon and a green and white highway sign that says Long Island 1/4 mile. How is that?

How about a logo of all the tracks that were closed on long island.

I was thinking about something like two cars sitting at a christmas tree waiting to run... "Long Island" above it, "Drag Racing" below it. Then the URL underneath it all. Or something like that.

Fantasy Factory makes some killer shirts, but I think he needs the graphics to be done ahead of time. I'll see if I can find somebody who can do the graphics, then we'll come up with a final idea. I guess I'll foot the bill for the graphics, but I can't cover all the shirts. I'm sure if we get enough of them at the same time it'd be cheaper than 1-off's.

Right, I meant did you draw it yourself. I don't want to go taking other people's artwork and using it for a logo or anything with permission... That's why I was gonna have somebody do a custom jammie.

I like that idea... Two cars, side by side drag racing on a LI shaped track. Long Island Drag Racing, get it? ;-)

But one of 'em has got to be a Mopar. :3gears:

ever go to a car show....camaros lined up for miles...you just dont really look at them ...dime a dozen....something different will catch your eye....and i think since this is a different type of entertainment....should be different type of cars..not the same ole same ole stuff...dont see too many dusters.....dont see too many 69 - 72 novas......they will catch your eyes........makes life more interesting...i think.....

spikeybabe22

cars are entertainment to me...so is this forum....you get out of it what you want...and everyones idea of what this is should be correct...and yes...theres tons of chevelles out there too....ive been doing this since the sixties...and its always been the oddball car that attracts attention....its like street rods..how many ways do you think you can put together a damn 32 three window coupe.....they all look about the same..

spikeybabe22
10-28-2008, 11:28 PM
your entitled your opinion but I have never seen one car exactly the same from a 32 ford..to a rat rod...to a chevelle monte camaro cutlass..el camino....everyone has their own tastes and likes...
