View Full Version : Newsday Helps Bring Oak Beach Car Show Into a BAD Light.

I read this article today and, it really ticked me off. They actually interviewed neighbors of the Oak Beach property that were against the car show and the noise. Seems that a few hot dogs leave the show one by one launching their cars hard as they exit and the neighbors are getting pissed. Some of the neighbors had no problem but the ones that did got Newsday down there to write about it.
Seems funny how they rush to write about the bad stuff and never rush to write about the good stuff.
I hope this shows that we need a raceway, but it will definitely shed a bad light on us hotrodders.
Read the attached article and see what I mean.
John, Dottie and Paul get it. It's all about sharing the Island. MS. McGinn probably sold the homes near westhampton and has reaped her rewards where now lives. Mr. Morrison has a point one we are trying to make by providing a safe legal facility where people could PEEL OUT safely and the noise would be accepted or agreed upon. Here's what we should do, go to this area as representatives of our organization with our safer streets flyer and ask these same people for their support and then have them call Newsday and ask to do a story on us. Your outcomes are they will say they're not intrested in helping to which they can continue enjoying what they have or they agree to do what we ask and either Newsday responds or they don't. If they do good for us if they don't good for us as we can go back to these very same people and tell them the media is part of our problem they are prejudice against us and paint us in a bad light with their reporting making society turn their backs on the only people working towards a solution. Done with respect we effectively use people against the racing to support our idea and racing in the proper location or show that Newsday is BIAS in their reporting and these people not from the motorsports community will see it first hand and be proof.

Yeah, but the funny part about that article is that there really aren't ever any jack rabbit starts from people leaving. Why? Because there are always at least 2 state troopers posted right at the exit looking at front plates. It was no different last weekend. I Don't know how that article goes on about "None, however, were present on a recent Sunday" because it's a crock.
Them being there collecting front plate ticket revenue is enough to deter everyone from acting like an idiot when leaving.
By the way the front plate thing has gotten insane too. From the second they park their car on the grass, there's usually only 5 more seconds until they pull a car for a plate. It was so bad that people were making a game out of it. They'd wait until the 2 cops each pulled a car, then leave in waves when they were busy writing tickets, to avoid a ticket themselves, and then repeat as they cycled back into their plate spotting posts.:violent1:

I have been there quite a bit over the years. I have no idea where this article came from. I think the confusion are some of the cars are loud but within legal limits where the ultimate of ultimate NIMBY'S have something to complain about.

What is the plate thing about? Is it a missing plate or improperly displayed or what?

Probably missing front plate, its a fast easy ticket for them.
I hate Newsday and News 12, they always seem to twist it around to make us look bad, its how they do things.
Remember Calverton in 07? News12?
I think Terry hit it right on the nose!!!

I remember years ago when I hung out on deer park ave a reporter came and said he was from a car magazine and picked out some cars and asked if the car owners would do a photo shoot. so they went into an industrial park at night and the reporter asked for some shots of the cars doing burnouts .days later newsday did an article stating that cars were dragracing on deer park ave and there was the photos of friends cars in the article.

if you remember some heavy hitters went to rte 231 to race in the am hours of the night back in the day. Trailers and everything showed up. Well I heard about it anyway. Hotrod magazine had 231 as one of the nation's top ten cruise spots in the USA. Newsday would never be able to catch them so they set up some of the locals.
I saw a sticker on a van the other day that said Newsday Sucks. Well its true.
LOL
The only thing Newsday or news 12 really care about is sales and ratings at who's expense doesn't matter. Honest reporting went out the window a long time ago all we have now is opinion. The times I've been out to Oak Beach I have seen a couple cars hit it but few and far between but it's the few that get reconized but the people that don't like what we stand for and the fair reporting breeds this concept. After reading about people being killed or maimed your average not interested in the sport but opinionated Long Islander in most cases people with no lives looking for a complaint to latch on to blame every hot rod and rodder they see for the accident. If it weren't for you this would have never happened when in reality it is us trying to provide the legal safe haven to provide the alternative to the streets. So who's the real problem?
i believe it, somehow we are becoming the minority
No we aren't. Those against us, know the right buttons to push to make us look bad. That in turn sways public opinion from folks who in all fairness, never even thought about us before. Don't believe? Next time News 12 runs one of those high speed car crash/illegal street race articles, watch the comments. Not from our camp, but from the recently opinonated, who don't know squat, but have all the answers. Those folks are the ones that believe we are looking for someone else to build us something, which is soooooo not true. If I wasn't home sick as a dog today, I could tell you stuff that has been said to me directly by people that is so untrue it would make your head explode. That all said, the motorhead community bears a little responseabilty here too. I have witnessed some HOLY COW!?! burnouts by guys leaving Oak Beach. As has been mentioned though there are usually Staties posted at the exit to keep things in check. It only takes a few to the damage though.....
Also, notice the picture they chose? Not one of the 98 point show cars, not a new Ferrari, but one of the most radical looking cars that they could find. More blatant bias.

Honestly, I've seen that car or a similar one at Captree in the cold of winter. One of those no heat brave persons that is true to his roots.

That black vette is usually at the Smithtown Cruise Nights on Saturdays.
Ive never been to OB on Sundays, too early for me to get there #1, but the front plate / illegal tint ticket spree keeps me away.

+1 but Art is right it's the picture they intend to paint to slant public opinion. The oh my God that thing looks dangerous. The have no clue of the history of gassers and the way things came about to where we are today. These people probably go to boat shows with their captains hats on and their new white deck shoes and say what a beautiful craft look at the craftsmenship but their all show no go they're armchair quarterbacks they have no clue the time and dedication that goes into building that boat but it's popular in the community they try to fit into, the Vett is as foreign to them as shining their own shoes something that brought about the shine box and the shoe shine man,to assist people incapable of craft or creativeness just appearing to be. The new Ferrari something bought off a showroom floor and probably a neighbor. That Vett is a vision of its owner and more than likely its builder it takes skill, creativity and having a dream to follow something they are destroying in this country with the showroom floor mentality. While the Ferrari is a desire the Vett will inspire kids to think outside the box create things become inventive something our government now says we need to import.

Boat salesman... "sir, this boat comes with twin supercharged 454 engines"
Boat buyer.... "but does it have a wine cooler?"
Boat salesman... "yes, but what you are missing is those engines have a combined 2000hp"
Boat buyer.... "great!!! I love having my wine chilled to perfection"

No we're just not organized. We need to reach out to the younger racers and get them wanting a track instead of wanting to go street racing.
We have been reaching out to the younger people but with no place to send them to they show little interest. From their point of view why waste time pushing for a legal track when we can just go here. Their kids invincable until something goes wrong. We know that the politicians realize that there are a lot of racers out there and they really can't stop what happens on the street from happening especially with no alternative, yet they keep us on the back burner and leave it status quote. The government controls the zoning so it is there where our debate begins, the rest will fall into place when they get on board and we are told yeah you can build one here this is the ideal spot.

mm- the plate thing is that the front plate is missing. we all know our cars look better without a mismatched colored license plate hanging in the front when the car is on display. from first hand experience my kid received a front plate ticket on a car i did a total customized front nose1617. the car was driven to shows and as a daily driver for over a year before i got a "no front plate" ticket driving around town. went to court and it was dismissed when i showed a picture of the car with its plate zip tied on. its more of a nusiance ticket because they probably don't want to cite the car/ driver for anything else and are just looking to cool the kids jets. thats nice in one sense as it satisfies the locals that the cops are doing their job and releases the cops from digging deeper by inspecting your car for some outlaw mod. also on the topic...muffler tickets. got one of those too and when i went to court i brought a receipt for a welded repair to the header and it was dismissed. I didn't even need the work receipt it seems because the judge looked at the ticket and said, "really...who is this officer", then dismissed the ticket. So the lesson here is NIMBY trumps all, however the police and judges seem to recognize this and are fair in the end.

So what youre saying is that if you have what appears like open headers even though you have inserts in the collectors will get you a ticket?

you know...once upon a time in America skaters (aka our kids) were outlawed and villified by local merchants, schools, and malls for practicing their craft zipping around parking lots and up and down public stair ways. It was truely a real nusiance dodging wheeled kids while walking down the street. The public spaces were ideally suited as they tended to be wide open and generally flat. Gee that sounds just like a street...hmmm i wonder why people run cars on the streets?
Anyways, politicians have since built and renovated public parks that incorporate halfpipes and other skateboard fun stuff to encourage the kids off the street. In fact there is an entire industry associated with skating, skate parks, apparel, toys and accessories...hmmm sounds like car stuff too. Hell, an offshoot of skateboards, snowboarding is even an Olympic sport !!! I guess since you can't ticket a kid and drag him/ her to court for rolling around on wheels, you wait until they are older and driving cars, then drag them to court. I said drag twice...i like drag (Blazing Saddles dialog anyone...lol). Just authorize the space to build the damn track already and i believe most racing will occur there. Can anyone say NHRA Nationals tour stop possibility !!! what about all the ancillary taxes and revenue from the supporting businesses. guess what politicians, the automotive industry is one of the largest industries out there and racers spend money, and their toys are more expensive than skateboards. If a politician can reconcile and overule what some believe is a morally subversive activity and NIMBY objections to things such as building casinos for the sake of recouping tax revenue and paying restitution to the islands Indian culture, why not ignore NIMBY and build legal race parks !!
Cruising will still occur at the long established hang out strips, and car shows and meets along with the associated front plate tickets will still occur, however i feel heads up racing on the street will be exercised in a more appropriate place if one exists. If it doesn't then the cops can enforce the hell out of it. Just my $0.02

the noise regulation is vague at best. it simply states its illegal (ticketable offense) to modify a muffler / exhaust system to sound greater than what the vehicle manufacturer designed it to be. read into that a little and you'll see why Harleys go rumbling down the street legally, but us uncorking the exhaust are noise makers. In 30 years of rumbling cars around the street, one muffler ticket on my kids import tuner hot rod...i like the odds, so i'm not really complaining, just saying its a way the cops can keep the kids in check.

I havent been down there yet with my car, but now im concerned because i have gasser style headers and I have inserts in them. One look and they will probably ticket me for open exhaust. Suffolk cty's finest has left me alone. Got a lot of long stares but I try not to do anything that would give them a reason to pull me over.

i wouldn't worry too much, they were probably just hassleing my kid in the screaming muffler tuner. just make sure you have a plate in the front and hit the clutch when you pass them so you'll run quieter lol.
