Here it is
My car had a hart attack (Hard low end knock)
I picked up the replacement in Delaware on Wednesday.
Today my cousin and nephew helped me take it out of the Van and into the garage Which BTW is my cousins, he is being nice enough to twist my arm into doing the work in his garage :headbang:. i can't thank him enough for this huge favor (Thank You Nelson)

Back to the car

On the "new" replacement engine i am going to put
1-New rear main seal
2-Timing cover gasket
3-Oil pan gasket
4-Red Lock-tight on the two screws that hold the oil pick-up tube
5- One year old CompCams Valve springs
6-Valve stem seals
7-Roller Timing set
8-Intake Manifold gasket
9-Modified Stock replacement Engine mounts
10-and a bunch of stuff i am sure i missed

Sounds like you had a relatively good day today. Cousins are a good thing and ones with garages are a great thing. Good luck going foward.

Did you do any compression testing on the motor yet? sometimes its good to check it before you start breaking it down. Know up front if you got to break her down a little further. Just a thought and i hope all goes well. good weather is a coming. wishful thinking right LOL

Nice find.

Mike

i hope the mains look as good as the rest.
i will also be pulling the lifters to check for cam and lifter wear as these motors are known for cams going flat.
Tomorrow i'll put in a few hours and i'll take some more pictures.

got around to working on the car again:2215:

The engine is completely loose with just the two lower bolts on the bell-housing holding everything together.

now i have to figure out how i am going to hold the trans in place, move the car and pull the motor out at the same time. small garage no space to leave the hoist or car stationary so i have to lift the engine roll the car out then move the hoist to the side then push the car back into the garage.

the bad:(
i found a hair line crack on the top side of the header in between rolls between the #2 and #4 cyl.:(

anyways the surprises on the replacement engine just started to show up i found a broken bolt in the top exhaust port of the #5 cylinder. Funny the shit people forget to tell you when they are selling something.:violent1::violent1::violent1::violent1:

To hold the tranny up I used a piece of fixture chain and bolted it to a point on the firewall. It's been holding for three years now and the car is on dollies so it's moved around once in a while 350 turbo with the conveter in it. If you don't want to scratch the firewall put a piece of garden hose around the chain. I know what your thinking split the hose. Don't have any old hose laying around, look over the fence to the right. It's frozen anyway your doing your neighbor a favor. You just sold your tig the tough lesson. Don't sell tools accumulate them. Everybody needs ten sheds in their yard five for parts, four for tools and one for the annoying house stuff that keeps you from opening the other nine.:headbang::hello:Don't forget to wear a hoodie your neighbor has cameras:violent1:

i went with the 2X4 it was super easy.

The engine is out
i pulled the pan and and found that the #6 rod bearing took a spin.
Everything else looks good.
i did notice that as i spun the engine you could hear a ton of compression escaping through the rings.
i am going to pull the valve springs off of it and store it as it is.
i'll post some pictures tomorrow.

i will be sending the down-pipe and headers to get welded and ceramic coated inside and out.

i was thinking about that, but the trans is only 9 months old and 3 of those months the car was sitting.

finally have the replacement engine on the stand and i started inspecting it.

don't know if i am panicking but i feel BEAT-THE F DOWN

At this time i am thinking that it definitely needs a cam and lifter set.
and a good cleaning on the inside of the engine.

1-the lifters have chips/grooves/ruff on the bottom outside edge (the area that rides on the cam)http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee2/turbopowered68/1968%20Chevelle/IMG_1509-internet.jpg
2-It has what appears to be a double roller chain with the tensioner still installed.http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee2/turbopowered68/1968%20Chevelle/IMG_1518-Internet.jpghttp://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee2/turbopowered68/1968%20Chevelle/IMG_1523-Internet.jpg
3-It has a blue plate on the oil pump.

Tmac

Know that feeling all too well. I bought another car because I didn't have the time to work on the one I have only to get a wrist pin knock after the shifter jammed doing a shot. I'm thinkin maybe buy another car.

TURBOPOWERED68

Here it is.

I told my friend (a Turbo Buick guy) about the condition of the two lifters that i looked at.
He was kind enough to come to my garage and look at the stuff him self. The first words out of his mouth was "Thats JUNK"
then he explained how the oiling system works and that i MUST pull the #1 bearing.
So we pull the #1 bearing and its is trashed, with no other choice we continued with the tare-down, All the lifters whir/ are shot and the cam has three rounded lobes and the oil pump had particles in it. the only thing holding up was the head gaskets.

"I just picked up a used Engine What should be done to it before dropping it in???" Have it rebuilt:mad::mad:

Just my fng luck i was so hyped up and getting ready to possibly drop it in this week end.
this sucks man i am not a happy camper specially being out $800.00 plus the time and trip to pick it up And now having to rebuild it.

the messed up part about this is the ship you start to think about about the seller after you find all this stuff
Did the guy know about it??? He is a Turbo Buick guy
He did say that he pulled the pan?????
Some of the push rods had the clean shinny spots (the part that goes through the head) on the bottom by the lifters- which indicates that the push rods whir at a minimum removed and reinstalled upside-down???
We met at a remote location (parking lot) where it would have been odd to open a motor up????
The motor was nicely packaged and who wants oil spilling in their brothers family DD?????
The seller showed up with no tools?????
I made the same mistake to also show up with no tools.
Not saying this was done purposely just simply looking at the facts

At this point i don't think that i would buy much else from any one else.

Back to the rebuilding an engine thread.

Just a point and not to add to your misery but that looks like just a double timing chain. (no roller) And yeah, I have been in your shoes. Bought car, got it home, and after it running for more than the three minutes it did when I bought it, it started knocking. I took the car back and the guy told me "too bad". I plotted many different punishments for this person. Karma stepped in two years later when a drunk driver totaled his pick up truck while it was parked in front of his house. :D

The Long block is in the builders (A personal friend and Turbo Buick guy)hands $$$.

So while that gets done i decided to clean up the engine compartment.

I want to cut 24 inches off of the Computer side of the harness and tuck all the wiring under the fender and out of sight.
This is the rats nest that i have right now.

The only reason this is happening this fast is because i am in my cousins garage and i want to get out ASAP and NOT over stay my "welcome".
He is a real cool dude, When i explained that the motor needed to be done i also told him that i would tow the car back home for the week or two and free up his garage and he said "NO way, stay until you finish the project"
If it wasn't for that/him this would be just about ready for 2013-14 thats my normal project speed - Slow, slower and lots of reverse LOL

From the past 10 years, about 95% of Chevy trucks are still on the road. The rest
made it home.

Have you seen the new speed limit signs? They say "Speed limit 65, Chevys-do the
best you can"

Thats not a leak, my Chevy's just marking its territory

Here I sit brokenhearted
Wishing that my Chevy started
But it didn't so thats a wrap
I think I'll shoot this piece of ****

"Chevy, built like a rock and runs like one too."

LOL i WIN!!!!

I never opened up a buick style oil pump, but I was wondering how smooth and open the oil passage ways are in the cover.
I always check for misalignment at the mounting areas and open up the passage ways on the main caps where the oil pump bolts on the chevy style. I round all the edges and smooth it out to flow better, even inside the oil pump in the well areas. You never have enough oil when you're screaming through the traps.

this cover is modified by Weber they are Buick V6 specialist that said
the oil passages have been enlarged and smoothed out.
the ignition alignment has been verified along with all other clearances

Does Weber have any reason for not using the high volume kit they sell for buicks?

Does Weber have any reason for not using the high volume kit they sell for buicks?

The high volume gears have a bad habit of eating the gears on the cam and ignition.
the Modifications on the cover are more then enough oil supply

I wonder if that high volume kit is used with a standard pressure spring would it cut the cam gear some slack. I use that trick on the chevys. Just a tiny bit more hp on the top end rpm. every little bit helps and its free so why not.

I have found a new level of respect for you engine compartment neat freaks.
i have been trying to clean things up, but it is SO much work and detail then one thing looks good and makes the other look bad and its tedious time consuming work and lots of work and time you get my point.
