Citing the "thousands of residents" in Suffolk County who consider themselves "motorsports enthusiasts," Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy said at a recent press conference that he is putting the pedal to the metal to get a motorsports venue built at a 755-acre recreationally zoned parcel on Enterprise Park at Calverton.

In the article in Suffolk Life Mr.Cardinale declares that the Calverton site IS zoned for AUTOMOTIVE&MOTORCYCLE racing but NOT DRAG RACING and would require a zoning change.I'm pretty sure but let me know if I'm wrong but drag racing is done with automobiles&motorcycles isn't it?

From the way it reads, it sounds like ATVs and drag racing are explicitly not permitted. Dunno why they'd do that, though...?

I'd like to see exactly how that code reads.Automotive, motorcycles & speedway operations.I get the difference between motorcycles and atv's(2 tires verses 4)but they are operated in the same manner. As for speedway's some are straight some are round.I don't think the code would distinguish especially since runways are straight.Seems odd to me.

I may be wrong but after calverton motorsports tried to build a dragstrip[dammed sand miners just want to sell the sand!!] I think the town changed the zoning so no dragracing would be permited.

ATV'S are not only 4 wheels. They include dirtbkes.Im part of both the atv and dragstrip groups. There are also many others that enjoy both. The hobbies are more similar then most would relize. We dont have anywhere to go for either of our hobbies which results in many taking it to the streets and protected woods.Suffolk County probably spends more on enforcement then it would cost them to give us a spot to go.I know they have a task police task force that drives through the woods and tries to catch atv riders.Im sure they probably have the same thing for looking for street races since there are groups that organize races. This would all be unneccesary if they just approved a legal location for all to go.I guess they would rather waste there money on paying cops on there 4 wheel drive slow quads try and chase riders with much more experience and faster atv's.I know they catch some but for the most part people just laugh at them and some even mess with them knowing they wont get caught.I just dont get it,theres all these places selling atv's and perf parts for cars on the island, where do they expect all these people buying them to go.

You can't have motorsports and decide what type of racing...
The property is zoned for motorsports and speedway activities...
Anything with a motor can be used in some type of speedway contest of speed...doesn't matter how the course is laid out...

It is in the wendy's shopping center on montauk hwy about 1 mile east of Oakdale/bohemia rd.Its every thurs and people start getting there around 4-4:30.
I left a post at their site their response wasn't what I expected, but now I see why it's taking so long.I understand the frustration but not the willingness to take the time at every opportunity to download a letter, sign it drop the 41 cents to maybe get a track. It probably takes about 5 minutes.Could it be quit while your behind, save the parts type thing.

It's the truth, and i say it all the time....
The motorsports community has no drive.....
Yeah you have 3 or 4 here and there, but for the most part there to blame for why there is nothing and it all vanishes....
Just go to any board and read there piss poor excuses...blah blah, i heard it all before, oh again, another we need to stand up, and whatever else they have to say...
As i am typing this it has me thinking what kind of useless p.o.s im breaking my ass for, spending my money so there informed...and why...i have gone this long with no road course, no drag strip....
There to good to make a phone call and write a letter...fuck them for fucking us
You guys are right.I'm amazed by the lack of knowledge out there. In my travels you wouldn't believe how many people don't even know about the Rexcorp plan and there's the ones that say oh that's never gonna happen.Well yeah if you don't get off your ass.But we've been there done that we give. The way I see it for less time it takes to go through a toll on your way to Jersey you could show your support for something that could end that trip, sht the most it will cost is a stamp.Any opportunity is a good opportunity. You gotta give it a shot. But then stupid is as stupid does Mrs.Gump.By the way I'm only a spectator, due to a street racing accident I have medical conditions that would probably keep me off the track. Now thats stupid.

Certain medical conditions will only keep you out of anything needing any sanctioned event licensing...SCCA,NASCAR,NHRA,IHRA....ect...
