Just an opinion here, but if you are looking to not spend coin, why a 12 bolt? An 8.8 is FoMoCo's answer to the 12 bolt. They are still in production, plentiful, and cheap.
All things a 12 bolt isn't.

Pardon my ignorance but what is the application for the 8.8 and is it a direct bolt-in to the 68-72 A-Body?
thanks for your help.

Duhh!!! i just figured out "FoMoCo"
just guessing here - id have to find one out of a full size car. Then have it modified to fit my car??
Wouldn't that be a lot more $$$$ then a direct fit 12 bolt??

thanks for the link
i don't know how i missed it:mad: since i check CL everyday
the guy said that It was just in a 65 Lemans SO it might not be a 68-72 but id be willing to sacrifice the 1.5 inches or so.
I just hope its not another BOP rear like the one another Long Islander was trying to sell me as Chevy rear:mad::mad:
Just to refresh my self

Chevy 12 Bolt = C-Clips, 12 bolts on the ring. Is this Right?????

thanks for the help and link.

Okay, unlike a G, there are no easy 8.8 swaps. How ever, consider this. A full size ford sedan (crown vic, LTD etc) housing can be had for less than $100.00. Go to a you pull it yard for your posi and gear out of an explorer for about the same. I'm pretty sure you are all set now with 31 spline axles, big tubes, etc. for cheap as you asked. The fab time for the LCA is a few hours (if you are handy) and then you have some choices to make regarding U joints and wheels. It is do able, just not for the meek.

Trick to setting up gears: patience! and a torque multiplying wrench for getting the preload correct on the pinion. I do em' in my backyard,or on my back in the street. Takes an afternoon. If you need parts I have a guy. Or just talk to Supershafts. Quickest turn around for sure.

I haven't forgotten, just trying to think it out carefully before I answer. With the rear out of the car should be easier, I have never had the opportunity. And depending on what gear set you are looking to have installed on the series carrier that you have (a series three IIRC) will determine what parts I will need you to have "on hand". For starters you will need a new seal, crush collar and pinion nut. A nice assortment of pinion and carrier shims too, though I have found that GM's factory shim jobs usually are pretty close. So you see if I didn't tell you all of this up front, it could turn a nice three hour job into a bit of a headache for everyone.

i got you

i will be blasting and painting the housing.
and cleaning out all of the gear oil (i hate that stuff)
the gears will be 3.42s
i was also thinking about rebuilding the posi unit with 400# springs
i am going to order 3 inch studs for the axles.

i was going to order an installation kit. but didn't want to buy anything like that yet as deferent builders like deferent brands.
