Downtown Cruise Night picks up speed
Impromptu car show triples in size in second week on the riverfront
BY JENNIFER GUSTAVSON |STAFF WRITER
JENNIFER GUSTAVSON PHOTO Pride and joy were on display in downtown Riverhead for the second week in a row last Thursday, after an impromptu car show called Wading River Cruise night was booted from Wading River. The second downtown event drew three times as many cars.
Martha Zarro had just finished a class at Peconic River Yoga when she noticed all the classic cars parked along the waterfront.

As the Riverhead resident made her way back to her car, she and her husband decided to take a quick stroll down memory lane.

"Oh my goodness!" Ms. Zarro said as she came across John Pettit's 1969 Javelin AMC ST. "I learned how to drive stick with this car."

'I learned how to drive stick with this car.'

Mr. Pettit's monster green classic was one of about 35 vintage automobiles parked along the waterfront, marking the second week former participants of an established "impromptu" car show at the King Kullen shopping center in Wading River have been meeting in downtown Riverhead. Two weeks ago, signs that read "no car shows" were placed in the King Kullen parking lot, where what came to be know as Wading River Cruise Night had been meeting on Thursday nights for six years.

George Edwards of Coram didn't mind driving the additional 10 miles to the new location, but he said while the new spot is nice, it's a bit hidden from the roadway.

"People that own the cars want people to see them," Mr. Edwards said about cruise nights. "There's no traffic here yet. Once more cars come down, then we'll have more traffic."

The relocation took place about a month after a story first appeared in the News-Reviewabout the Wading River custom. The shopping center owner, Charles Serota, had ordered the car enthusiasts to leave, citing complaints from tenants that they were taking up too many parking spaces.

Mr. Serota had also expressed concerns about liability issues, because the event isn't run through an organized club. Car owners have resisted forming such a club, citing costs and tradition.

The move to downtown Riverhead came at the suggestion of Town Supervisor Sean Walter.

And many drivers said Wading River's loss is Riverhead's gain. Some of the car owners were already thinking of ideas for next week, including making more room for cars by parking in the west lot.

"It might take some time to gain momentum," said cruise night regular Steve Shauger of Baiting Hollow. "We have a good turn out tonight. Hopefully we can make it a win-win situation for the businesses and the participants."

I heard about this one at the Yapank show.Couldn't make it today will be there next weekend. I heard it's a pretty good show. Is there anybody out there with a handle on all the shows that could post them all days and time. I'm going to try and roll the circuit like I use to. Can't do Wednesdays though.

I normally work thursday nights. I ditched work to be there on the 24th, so it does not seem likely for me. Plus you would need a current tetnus shot to get close to my car. If I get out early, I could may be jet out and be there late (9 ish) Interesting mix of cars. I even saw a genuine "N/T" money race car there. (grudge car) Saw some familiar faces too. Just think how great it would be to have that show on runway 5/23 at Calverton. Plenty of room there.....

If we were looking to impress the town of Riverhead on the current car scene on Long Island and the value that the motorsports community can bring to an area we should flood this show, make it the show to go to, and maybe we would win the support of the community to support the idea of a track there.

As good an idea as any. The window dressings that were handed out that said as much were a good idea too who ever thought of that. I was talking with Fordboy last Thursday and he still thinks the revenue is much higher than I have ever envisioned. Funny what you learn when you bounce ideas around. Like I've said before, you never know which angle is going to be the one that works, so throw everything at the wall. Something has to stick.

I think we should hand out the window dressing at every car show on L.I. and tell the people WHENEVER they are showing their cars they should put them on there cars. I think we should also tell people to go to the Riverhead show and show strong support there. We've been waiting long enough time to get it done. It could work. One problem is getting flyers to the people, any volunteers? If you go to a show anyway it isn't putting you out of your way. I'll post shows I'm going to if you want flyers to hand out just let me know and I'll bring them to that show. I'll be easy to find I'll be the guy handing out flyers. If people could post shows I'll try to get there, keep in mind I live in Patchogue and work in Manhattan so certain areas are out of my reach like Nassau. If anyone takes the train out of Penn and would like to pick some up in manhattan I work right near there pm me and I'll set you up.

Exit 60 should be County 51. Take that to the "wildwood lake cutoff" (County 36 I think) and it will take you right there. There is a big Valero station by where you get off Sunrise if that helps.

Were cars posting the LIMA support flyer on their windshields? I made up a new one that has instructions on them. We need to express to the crowd how important this is at this point in time.
