March 16, 2010

ATLANTA (AP) -- Senators have cleared the lane for local street races, touted as an economic development initiative for cash-strapped Georgia.

Senate Bill 345, sponsored by Sen. Jim Butterworth, passed 41-9 on Tuesday. Under the proposal, racing on highways or streets would be allowed when the race is sanctioned by the county or municipality and the road is closed to other traffic during the race.

Emergency medical personnel would also have to be present at events and the race would have to be publicized 30 days prior to the event.

The Cornelia Republican says such races could be a big tourism draw for Georgia. Critics derided the proposal as a public safety issue.

Those nine against are probably transplanted Long Islanders. A great idea though I think industrial parks here could accommidate, where the state buildings are in Hauppauge. Those roads are empty on weekends. Expressway service road. How hard would it be for them to cut an extra on ramp that could be gated and opened during racing for traffic to be diverted where service rds. are long like between 64 & 65 north side.

+1 Excellent idea and concept.

How do we get our Senators on board with this?

Well we could all move to Georgia. I don't know. Getting hold of that piece of legsilation might help, it's public record. From the begining I've been saying we need to get the politicians on our side all of them, to work with us. We need to show we're just like every other sports fan/player. They hold the key and that key is called zoning. If you think about it some of the places where street racing goes on are ideal for such a program. Food for thought for the next meeting.

Did some research today.

Looks like NYS Vehicle and Traffic Laws already exists to allow special use for racing.

An application has to be filed.

I'll try to post later what I found.

We can discuss at the next meeting.

Vanderbuilt races were run on L.I. roads. Motor Pkwy was built for it. We should research where roads were used and what type of racing was done on them. There is a guy with LIMA named Howard Korplick that would know that answer. He has a vast knowlege of the motorsports history here. He's written at least one book and has a web site dedicated to it called Vanderbuilt Cup.

Didn't a group of people get splattered during a sanctioned race in TN?

I remember hearing something about that I thought it was in the middle east where a pro mod went out of control. The people were standing right along the side of the road. No barricades. Research it and find what went wrong. Don't make the same mistake. People are getting splattered against trees and innocent people driving on public streets are getting killed too by street racers. Don't you think it's better to put it in an enviroment where the possibility of something going wrong is factored in and be prepared for it over taking chances on any stretch of road that looks right for the moment. It's not rocket sicence, it just requires common sense. We should investigate what they are doing in Georgia. Think positive.

When was the last time a bystander got killed in a street race on LI?

According to the media 2005, although I don't know the specifics of that case, wiether it was just speeders or wreckless drivers that they claim are drag racing...

The Tennessee incident was a car show with a burnout contest, not street racing

If it never happened in the past doesn't mean it isn't going to happen in the future. But it has and it will. How many kids died hitting trees, flipping cars or crashing into other cars killing those people. The idea here is to make an area KNOWN to be legal and as safe as it can be for those participating. Be ready for the possibility when something goes wrong, have rules for racers and those that came to watch to cut down on the chances of injury. Doesn't that make sense to you? You could race in daylight without having to worry about running from the law, rather than sneaking around at night. That shit maybe was cool when I was a kid being the outlaw but I'm 53 now and an inlaw. I've lived the what can happen side and wouldn't wish it on anyone. You can't turn back the clock and it follows you forever.

yeah im guilty of it too...the sixties ..god ...more street racing ...and when you got caught...they really just wanted you out of thier beat...hand slapped and you cooled it for the night.......vanderbuilt race killed a few too....you cant do it in the street...without doing it right.....but i find it very interesting.....no room for it anymore...they take your car....you hurt someone...too much to risk today ....and fortunately most of us have grown up with families....dont want to see my or anyones loved one hurt because two guys think that one is faster than the other.......

To be 100% honest both. Street racing will never die. Half the fun is seeting up a spot and getting the word out, and avoiding the law. A legal place would be great too. Both have their atvantages and disatvantages.
Street racing is just in my bood. always has been always will be and plenty of people I know feel the same way.

PS Good run last night Bill W. That Camaro is HOT!!

Suicide to be honest with you I'm pretty sure everybody on this site, but you, is dedicated to the legal side of racing, and aren't interested in the dare devils out there taking chances at the expense of all Long Islanders. What you support is what is killing our effort. Everytime shit happens on the street we get the blame. Let it be known to all that check us out we are against street racing. We would like a safe legal alternative that is what we are all about. Suicide if street racing is in your blood why don't you go to a street racing site and post or start a site of your own that we can post what the disadvantages of the illegal racing are. I'm sure they'll be well received there. Racings in our blood but we're trying to keep the blood off the streets, poles, trees, dashboards, windshields, sheetmetal, ect.. Have you ever seen a body mangled in a wreck it ain't pretty. I see you as the type to say well it wasn't anybody I know so line em up. Well when it is you'll see life through different eyes, eyes you can't shut. Bill W. glad to hear your Camaro is hot I hope I never have to read it got hot hitting a tree and bursting into flames. Rainman said he's a good driver too!!!!

bad answer suicide.........weve been off subject many times on many threads...but being for illegal street racing...not good at all....we see them on the highways zig zagging in and out of traffic....in thier hopped up rice burners....papers call it drag racing...gives us a bad name.....then we have the guys that light up the streets from light to light....all put in the same category...not good at all.....i only hope when someone does it...theres a cop watching that light...and gets them off the street before they harm someone.....
