Once we know what car shows to attend we will discuss a plan to hand out more flyers.
We should have the show schedule at the next meeting.

the long island street rods have two annual shows ..one in the spring and one in the fall...they also had hosted a few nostalgia drags at the old westhampton drag strip years ago......i have some friends in it but if someone has a good hook with them ....i think theyre the ones to get on board with us......they have to be one of the largest well organized club on the island.......
Sorry I wasn't able to attend last night. Next month should be better for me.
If you look in the community thread we only have one link for a car clubs and it's a start up club not that ,that's a bad thing but you would think car clubs would link so they can post their events here. I have approached several clubs given paperwork to them but have gotten the usual results. Is it me I bathe regularly brush my teeth use mouth wash. I don't understand this mindset, it was the main reason LIMA was started to get everybody together. It do make sense.

I was able to get a deal with the Independent, we can put a insert (flyer) in each paper for a cost of $25/1000 inserts, down from $80/1000. They send out 17K per week. We should discuss on how we can use this most effectively.
If we can put together a car show/event, I have a couple of ideas that can draw us some money to cover the costs of all this....
Thoughts/suggestions???
Are you suggesting we have an event/show where we charge a admission. I think we would need to be a legit or registered organization that would require records being kept. I'm pretty sure we had that idea a while back and voted it down then. This site is property of Mike Beck and LIMA is Marty's and any kind of venture using their site names would require their backing. I think our original idea was a dues thing to create fund to use for club expenses. If you think it's hard to get members now imagine if we told them it cost ten bucks to join. Lots of car clubs do charity events and get good press for doing the right thing maybe we should look in that direction. Toy runs, care packages for the military, Haiti,ect..Contact a charity and ask if w could sponsor an event. Seeing as how LIMA does a lot of the legwork anything we do I like to see being done as a joint venture. Posting here and there to show support and activity on both sites.

My club (NYMCC) does charity events, cancer walks, Toy run for Little Flowers children Shelter at the holidays.
We also attend a few events where all the $'s go to a charity.
Its going to be hard to have us put on a show/event, theres alot that would be needed,
Ins., is one of the biggest costs.
Permits to have gathering/car show and location with approval from land owner.
Now if someone here owns a big enough pc. of property where it could be held then its a different story.
We would need very little, just the people to attend.

I think there is two issues to address.
Dan's girlfriend, Lisa had an idea at the meeting for us to become a NTS not for profit corporation. This would allow us to be recognized as a group when we use our petition. I think is is a good idea but like Tmac said it is Mike B's website and he has the final vote.
I would like to see if Mike B can attend the next meeting to discuss. I would like to meet him also.
Tommy: Can the car show event be a joint club event? LID members would help out with the event but your club would take the lead.

Long Island Cars has shows all over...port washington...belmont...flowerfield..like Tmac said threads/months ago if we have difference chapters to go to these shows and hand out information and flyers....just my .02

That's not a bad idea Tara. Not sure on what a booth or spot would cost at a show. Maybe they can give a discount since there isn't anything being sold.
I went to a modern Mopar muscle meet (Charger, 300, Magnum, Challenger, SRT Jeep) a couple weeks ago, handed out some flyers that I printed from here. Also brought some decals with me and gave a few out.

for the long island street rod shows the spot is 25bucks.....selling or not....either way....i always sell stuff there....so if someone gives me some flyers...ill be glad to give them out....in fact...a friend of mine is at the gate...and will give each and ever car comming in a flyer.....easy enough.......another ideah...just put one in everyones car as you go thru the lot to see the cars.....not really a hard thing to do .....why make it more difficult...?/???
i know we did this before....even at the coliseum car show......unfortunately no one new from the show came to join in ...marty said it wouldnt work...cause its been done before...but for the life of me...i cant figure out a way to get other car people....drag racers...etc...involved....they want a track but wont show up ...............................same ole same ole.....

A fucking flyer?

You have been doing this for a while and ITS NOT WORKING.
We need to join a group that has a plan.
Even if you joined a group that has a plan, how do you expect to get the word out? Hand out gold watches? I get flyers at every show I go to, I read them. People spent time and money to make them, at the very least I take a look at it. If its something that interests me I fold it up and put it in my pocket. If its not, then I throw it out.
Unless you have some cash for advertising on TV or radio or to hold a car show or event, then a flyer is pretty much the only cost effective solution.
I can be a realist too. Do I think there will ever be another track on Long Island? No, but there is always hope. I do what I can, I do what I can afford. Just like everybody here. We all do what we can to try to make a track a reality. If you have a better idea than a flyer, post it up. For now, it's what we've got. Until we find another way to spread the word, I'm all for it and will continue to hand them out.
Here are some of the excuses I've gotten over the years.
(1) I went to a few of those meetings.I ain't gonna happen
(2) With the price of property here there's no way it could make money.
(3) Who's gonna build it.
(4) The Hamptons crowd doesn't want it. They run the east end politics.
(5) Keep it up if you get it done we'll be there
(6) There's something going on a Etown,Island Or Atco that weekend
(7) I just like showing not into racing.
(8) Why bother everybody is leaving L.I. anyway.
(9) I'm not that into cars.(walking around at Bald Hill show)
(10) There's no drag strip in the plan. I'm not wasting my time to give spoiled rich kids a playground.
There's the top ten.I even had people run away from me when I was tring to hand them a flyer, like I was going to hurt them. I agree that some of these concerns were valid and we maybe should have approached some of it in a different way. I figure that at least 30,000 flyers were handed out easily. Setting up a booth at a show might be a good idea.Sign people up right there. We would need a banner of some sort table few chairs and people to sit in them. Maybe do some of those town events to get to the general public. It's early yet. Something to discuss at the next meeting.

Handing out flyers is definitely better than bitching and doing nothing. Spring is almost here and the fun shall begin once again. Whatever is decided, Lisa and I are here to assist!!! Everyone is making valid points, the work is tedious, but now is not the time to quit. Damn. Flyers are, for "us", cost effective. Our enemy here is apathy, not each other. Some how or other, the defeats "we" have suffered have divided the motorsport community. Like any other broken thing that involves people, the road back is long and difficult. Pitchblack mentioned his inner thoughts, and I will share mine. If after everything is said and done and we get a facility, not enough people support it? I remember when we still had choices and the folks that wouldn't support what we had because it wasn't up to thier standards. We have oval competitors right now who choose out of state over local for reasons like that. But I'm way ahead of myself. The likely hood for a temporary solution is quite good right now. And I'm happy to work towards that.

LIMA has a plan they have investors the problem is nobody knows about it or is just to lazy to get off their asses to do anything about it. Then we get guys like you that knock every idea that us poor people come up with. We live in the world of the blue collar worker and have to go with the resources we have which is our time and the few dollars we can spare to try and advance our cause. You as it seems come from a different place, the world of the filthy rich so you see things from the other side of the tracks. If your so into the idea of a race track being built on Long Island why don't you take some of your own money which it appears you can afford and do something. With all the money you say you have why not build a track yourself, we'll use it. Or would that be a bad investment? Kev would probably be real pissed off at you if you did that. Hey wealth is power, honesty is a virtue. I trust my friends at their word that's something you can't buy even in spanish. My neighbors help each other out,not check them out.
You have no idea where I come from or what my story is so here goes.
I startred investing 28 years ago, from buying property to investing 15% of every paycheck no matter how small. I lived in 250 sq. ft apartment for 7 years while my friends were out partying, getting laid, making 75K a year and spending every cent of it. I ate Ramen Noodles till they were coming out of my ears and drove a shit bucket car for 10 years. I stayed home on weekends. I've trolled thrift shops to buy suits, grown my own food, been on food stamps.....
I did this with a vision, hard work and more sacrifice then you would ever know to get where I am now.
All you see is what I have, well tough. Most people I know, like myself, have no "off button" We eat, live breathe investing and are dam good at it. My friends and myself don't arives at work at 9:00 and mentally get there at noon like most POS, my gears don't turn that way.
This past Januay 1st I sent a check to the US Treasury for 115K. Want to know how much my stimulus check was Mr. TMAC??
$0.00
What was yours?
You, of course, only see the fruits of all my hard work— the nice houses, the cars, ect. not what I have done to acheive it.
You ask about investing is a race track, its a tough gig. We ran a cost program on it.....no thanks.
Maybe a temp "hobby" plan as a private club but regarding a World Class Complex, we don't see it.

From the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce:
http://www.charlottechamber.com/emerging-industry/motorsports-mecca/
"A 2004 study conducted by the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute revealed that the motorsports industry created a total economic impact in North Carolina of over $5 billion. That includes the direct, indirect and induced impacts of auto, truck, boat and motorcycle racing in the state. According to the study, about $4 billion of that total amount impacted the Charlotte area alone, creating over 18,000 motorsports-related jobs. The average compensation for direct motorsports generated jobs was over $70,000 per year."

So suicide did anything positive come out of this cost program ? Can we see it ? What kinda of facility would you recomend ?
What would your approach be to get that facility ?
A private club with membership fee's. I do not reccommend a "all in one" type facility, just drag racing. Best location would be an IN USE industrial park, land is lower cost and there is an existing tax base already. If you want me to go into details I will. Sad part is this will be the easy part.
When I came on this post today I inadvertantly came up on the first post by Big Block Bill and it dawned on me that here was a guy that was in the sport from way back and he was really looking foward to comming to the next meeting. I never met Bill but was looking foward to it. Those that knew him talked highly of him. Bill was a positive, he said there was money out there looking, he felt it could happen. I felt that being around the sport as long as he was he would be somebody in the know and had connections. Bill's recent passing was a shock to me and I'm sure many of you especially those of you that knew him. I had a real sinking feeling when I read Mikes post. I'd like to ask everybody here maybe from this day foward to post constructivly and think about guys like Bill and all the others that have been there did the legwork put in the effort and show some respect when you post. If you can't do that you are a burden to those that are here doing what it takes. Anybody can change and be positive and we could maybe start by deleting posts of ours we feel do damage. I can delete any post but would rather you delete your own. It would be a statement of your character.

I personally shy away from forums that delete posts and threads and I would totally be against any one deleting some one else’s posts or threads.
BUT for some one to delete their own it could be a good thing, BUT at the same time what’s been said has been said and if they made them self look like an A S S with a dumb comment the post will always be there to remind them of it.
Also in this type of brain storming one or more persons NEED to play devils advocate.
What about closing this one and starting another thread?
Could I get the date and location of the next meeting...........thanks...............Bill
We don't know Bill but be easy on us when you tech us in and keep a place in the staging lanes opened when they call our class.

This is an idea I have brought up for years, if not an existing maybe a future or being built like at Epcal. If you could go into details to give everyone an idea of what it would take. I realize the not depending soley on a race facility for income and tax revenue is a great part of this picture as land owners and investors want maximum return on their investment, especially in todays market. I think they would be on board but the politics of it all is something we need an education on. Rechler is a big commercial developer, why hasn't he come up with a plan? He has a piece of that EPCAL industrial zone. In NYC there is fortunes made in selling air rights to neighboring properties so your site can't effect the view of theirs in the future. The hard part is where we need to start than it only gets easier. There are plenty of industrial sites out there hurting right now also with empty buildings that fall into disrepair.

shoreham ..calverton area.....theres nothing there....soil might even be not good enough for building homes...but good enough for a dragstip..........also thought that if we want to hold a ralley...get all the other clubs on long island involved..make it a cruise day...start off in like...at rt 110 and go to riverhead.....all the different clubs might like to join in..they do cruises....wed have a ton of cars....instead of just us.....anyone tried anything like that...?
that would be cool, others can join the caravan at every exit. We would need a spot in Riverhead to ultimately end up at. Would also need permission from the owner of the property.

i live in queens...and the people in brooklyn ...staten island and the bronx can join the caravan on the lie as we go buy ..picking up more and more cars.....we can email all the car clubs and make it a date to remember.........
We tried a cruise a few years ago it was a complete failure. We did the flyer deal prior so it was out there but at the Nassau Suffolk border where it started about twenty cars showed. We picked up a few along the way but nothing like we thought. We went to the F14 site to meet with the press and Cardinale who were there but unfortunatly we weren't. A good showing that day we be talking this season here. We had them but we didn't show in force. I'm not saying it's a bad idea quite the reverse but you need to get people to come really not just say yeah we'll be there.
Suicide brought up an issue about building a drag strip within the confines of an industrial park. I have brought this idea up a while back. It makes a lot of sense as the land owner doesn't need to rely soley on revenue created from the track making the investment more worth it. Wait for his details post and we can maybe base our direction on that. If we know how or where we need to go for solutions we could focus our energy where we need to. There is a process we need to follow.

We should try this again this yr, and go to RH or f14 site, or a different location.
We may have to so it a few times to get our message across.
I say lets try it again this yr.!!!!!
We have an in with the owner of the F-14 spot. Other than just to cruise, what else are we gathering about? Not trying to be a d*ck or anything. Last time we had media ( who basically hosed us)((print and sortof tv))and elected officials to "hear" us. So we sorta dropped the ball. That time. I'm in, just keep me posted.

im talking about contacting the heads of all the car clubs on long island...and seeing if they can make it one of thier cruises.....this way they will motivate thier members.....instead of us just giving them flyers.....and if each one of us takes one or two clubs...well tell ya who is interested and whos not...instead of leaving up in the air.....ill take lisra and the roadster club.....anyone else?....but first we need a saturday to do this...with pickup points along the way ..long island expressway theres a nice pulloff spot after it leaves queens going east.....
It's a good idea but we need as Art pointed out a reason for being there which should be to protest the lack of a legal race facility and a government that stands idlely by as kids die street racing. The past events I attended where attendance was reqiured everybody was absent except the regulars. My friend is a member of Gold Coast Cruisers which has the Western Beef guy in it they didn't want to get involved their just into showing cars.
Everybody I've talked to wants it even people not into racing because they think it's necessary and a good idea but to get them to do anything that's where we hit a snag you see they think us few will get it done for them. I'm all for it and will attend but I'm one of the regulars.
Here's a good measuring stick. People that want a motorsports park can show it by posting on the facebook li press page and of course the petition lets see the results there that will kind of indicate the results of the people comming to a rally

Tommy has a great idea.
Spikey, Jayman and Nova have also stated the same idea. I think it is a good one also.
With the nice weather coming shortly we should dust of the cars and take a cruise to the F14 site. We can scope it out and possibly plan a show.
My father is buried at Calverton and I went there last week for a visit. After the cemetery I drove across the street to the access road for the Calverton runways. Attached are some pictures of the 7,000 foot runway we are fighting for to drag race on and the parking lot at the F14 site.
I would like to get closer to the runway to get a better idea what shape it is in.
It looked like is was in decent shape from the access road.

I'm not saying your idea is a bad idea,it's not if setup right it could get the results we're looking for that being waking up the public and government that we still lack a safe legal facility. Maybe I'm on the wrong page are you saying we should be part of one of their cruises/shows set up a table and sign people up give out information, go to their show and conduct a protest, or have them have a cruise with its intent being a protest and we come along for the ride? I've approached car clubs in the past and most times I get a response that they are happy showing their cars and have given up on getting a race track here but would love it if "WE" could get one back. A couple of years ago my wife who isn't into racing went with me to one of those LI car shows events the one where they leve the discount coupons all over, to help me hand out flyers. While we walked around handing out flyers she heard the people saying great idea we need this good luck but she also heard them saying how they were happy just showing their cars and they thought racing here was over. My wife being who she is said how I was spending all this time going around to shows to get a race facility built and he doesn't even have a car and you guys have cars and just want to look at them to me that's boring . Why build these big motors spend all that money to look at, that seems stupid. Wouldn't you rather watch them go or be racing. All the heads dropped and they were neutered.
If you/we could get these clubs together for a day to protest we would wake up Long Island to the numbers of people interested in motorsports. We've been trying maybe it's our sales pitch. Bikers just have to say there's a ride and there are thousands. Car guys that's another story. Maybe it's that bikes get better gas mileage.

At present these runways are tied up with the Riverhead Resorts bs and can't be used until they are finished.

Than why does Riverhead allow the Sky Diving business to use of the 10,000 ft runway?
The 10,000 ft runway is open and the 7,000 ft runway is closed.

we dont be part of thier club.........we ask them to plan thier cruise with us......they can show thier cars....sit in chairs....just show up ....the heads of the clubs know what is going on ...we dont sneak anything....but theyre there to back us up on a drag strip....the long island street rod assoc put a few nostalgia races in west hampton.....chevelle club rents the track in etown.......just to name a few.....i cant see how these guys wont back us and bring out thier cars to show and to say .....were here on long island...and need a track.....doesnt matter if they dont use it as a club....but if you went to etown or island ....how many people do you bump into from long island....a shit load....

My guess (and it is just a guess) is that the skydive people have a lease that was in effect loong before anything else came along. Or it could just be the same old bias against "us". Or if the big runway is "active", (a flying term) that fact supersedes anything else. My dad is a pilot, I will ask him.

not to be a dick, but can we set something up, because we are going in a damn circle again and its going to be 9 more pages of b/s when i said this like page 2....You all want to do this in June? May? When? You want people to know? Hand flyers out @ car shows? Maybe someone can call li car show ppl and see @ the end like tmac said maybe we could team up with the person handing out the flyers.... then no one can say they didnt know.....BEST SHOW WOULD BE BELMONT TO INCLUDE NASSAU PPL....maybe this is where the diff "chapters" could come into play.
here is the schedule:
MARCH 27 & 28 / Belmont Racetrack, Elmont
SUN APRIL 11 / Flowerfield Fairground, St James
SUN APR 25 / N Hempstead Beach, Pt Washington
SUN MAY 2 / To be Announced
SUN JUNE 6 / Flowerfield Fairground St James
SUN AUGUST 1 / Flowerfield Fairground, St James
AUGUST 21 & 22 / Belmont Racetrack, Elmont

That's the Show Cars group. They don't mind if you go to their events you just have to pay. We could rent a space and sell our wares, get signatures and give out info. I think they get fifty for a spot. That not posted spot might be in Brentwood they usually have one there right off the expressway exit 53 or 4

My dad looked it up on the "sectional" (an aviation map) and that has Calverton listed as "closed" for what that's worth. I dunno, I've seen planes take off from there myself so there must be some sort of arrangement.

Can I build on this a bit? The idea for LIMA and this BB was to be a place where people could come and see whats going on. For what ever reason, that does not appear to be the case. So in keeping with the idea of chapters for outreach, let me put an idea out. We all pretty much "hang out" on different internet Bulletin Boards. (LIStangs,SVT and others) Why don't we as individuals, just spread the word that way? Pick the one or two that you spend time on, and just keep folks posted. Maybe thats the way, just control C, than control V and your done.

LI Sky Dive is at the location, they use RW5 and the taxi ramps. The larger runways are beat to hell. The tore up some sections to STOP the racing that was going on late at night (it was an ok spot but the concrete would dampen real quick) Gabreski, and the big three local airports know the location as an emergency ditch alternate. Just like quogue airport.

As was mentioned, 7 is a nice time to get there. If it is a decent day, the two small lots fill up quick. Folks come and go so it keeps moving. At the moment they are doing some sort of construction on the northbound drawbridge over the State Boat Channel so leaving is a bit weird unless you are headed west to Jones Beach.

Actually the "established" republicans are favoring Lazio, and are pretty much shunning Levy. So if he wants to run, it would be on an independent ticket of some sort. The dems are all goopy over a guy who has raised a pantload of dough, and hasn't even announced weather or not he is going to run...... whatta pisser

When I met him in person last summer he told me pretty much the same story.
IMO he is on our side. The past Riverhead officials have been the problem.
Maybe he is what we need to clean up Albany. It is a joke what is going on up there.

I met him once also and got the same impression. He has stuck his neck out there on issues like immigration where I agree with his stand it is the law he was just tring to enforce it and it cost him politically. Early on though he seemed to be talking out of both sides of his mouth when it comes to us. He seems like a regular guy but he is a seasoned politician. He's what we have to work with and you get more with sugar than vinegar. He's only one of too many on L.I. and we've got to get them all or at least a good part of them. With November elections comming we need to find out who's with us.
