Nassau's gain could be our gain as one less competitor is around for EPCAL.

Horsley “Shinnecocks Consider Proposals for Casino in Suffolk”

Private Developers To Deliver Presentations to S.C. Gaming Task Force

Lindenhurst, NY – At the June 10th meeting of the Suffolk County Gaming Task Force (SCGTF), the Shinnecock Indian Nation along with other members of the SCGTF will hear presentations from private developers for a casino. Developers will discuss properties they own which they feel provide the best opportunities for the Shinnecock Nation and Suffolk County residents. Presentations are expected to consider acreage, transportation, infrastructure, community support/opposition and environmental impact of the site.

Suffolk County Legislator Wayne Horsley states, “Through open and honest discussions we hope to partner with the Shinnecock Nation to bring a vehicle for economic development and jobs to Suffolk County residents and members of the Shinnecock Nation.” He continues “I would like to thank the members of the Shinnecock Nation for partnering with Suffolk County’s task force. Their journey to gain federal recognition has been long and arduous and is about to be finalized this month. The Shinnecock’s dedication to attaining their rightful status affirms their commitment and integrity to much needed social programs, funding, and their right to operate a casino, which makes them a great partner for Suffolk County now and in any future endeavors.”

Legislator Horsley drafted legislation creating the Suffolk County Task Force. The task force consists of representation from Suffolk County government, Town Government, organized labor, financial institutions, and higher education.

I wonder who will represent the taxpayers of Suffolk and the land that "they own which they feel provide the best opportunities for the Shinnecock Nation and Suffolk County residents."? Man I don't like the sounds of this. 10 am on a Thursday? No way I can do that. Thanks for the heads up though.

The piece by the new Clare Rose. Would make sense. The casino advantage is that people don't all leave at once like a sporting event.

Burman makes pitch for EPCAL casino
BY VERA CHINESE | STAFF WRITER
A Garden City builder wants to put a Shinnecock Indian Nation casino at the former Northrop Grumman property, something he said could be a Las Vegas or Atlantic City-type destination right in Calverton.

Jan Burman, president of the Engel Burman Group, described the site, which was purchased from Riverhead Town in 2001, as "shovel ready" and said construction on a casino could begin as early as the day after plans were drawn.

"If you want to be in the ground quickly, we feel this is your best option," he told members of the Suffolk County Gaming Task Force Thursday at a forum at the county's William H. Rogers Building in Smithtown.

The committee was formed as a way to present potential Suffolk County casino sites to the tribe and to influence members to build the project locally.

Mr. Burman was the only developer to make a pitch Thursday.

Suffolk County Legislator Wayne Horsley (D-Babylon), who sits on the task force, noted that one study said Long Islanders spend $400 million annually at Connecticut casinos like Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun and added that a Suffolk casino would create about 1,000 local jobs

"Shouldn't we be in that mix," he said.

Wherever the Shinnecocks decide to build, that land will be taken off the tax rolls. Mr. Burman noted that if the tribe chose the Calverton site, they would most likely strike some deal with Riverhead Town as compensation for no longer paying taxes.

Mr. Burman said the 95-acre property located just off Route 25 is currently zoned for more than 1 million square feet of new development. He said the site would be accessible by car, train, ferry and possibly charter planes.

One of the biggest advantages, he said, was that the site had no adjacent residential neighbors.

"We think there is a need for gaming locally," Mr. Burman said. "We are firm believers that if people are going to gamble somewhere it should be in their backyards."

Mr. Burman said as of now, the site is only easily accessible from the Long Island Expressway via the William Floyd Parkway exit, but he said an exit with direct access to the EPCAL site could be petitioned for later.

That site, located about 20 miles away from the Southampton reservation, would allow the tribe's members to commute to the casino.

Shinnecock tribal trustee Lance Gumbs said he was interested in Mr. Burman's proposal, but that a decision was a long way off.

"It's one of the sites that we'll definitely take a look at," he said. "I do have concerns about the access."

The tribe is expected to receive federal recognition within the next few months.

I thought there was some kind of regulation in the sales contract between the Navy and Riverhead that prohibited gamming at that site. Later petition for a direct access exit off the expressway taxpayers get to pay for that a tactic that builders have used for years to shed costs of their projects. Like power source for Riverhead Resorts. All the hidden cost, cost us.

Despite concerns about its remoteness, a 95-acre parcel of land located in the center of a former Grumman facility in Calverton was pitched by its owners Thursday as a "shovel-ready" site for a Shinnecock Indian Nation casino.

At the same time, Brookhaven Town Thursday said it has had "continuing discussions" with the tribe about the use of Brookhaven Calabro Airport as a casino site.

Supervisor Mark Lesko described the talks as "very cordial," and said, "I'm listening as much as I'm talking."

Calverton and Brookhaven airport are two of more than half a dozen sites being considered for a casino by the Southampton tribe as a decision on its federal recognition status looms. Tribal leaders and their financial backers at Gateway Casino Resorts in Detroit met with Gov. David A. Paterson's administration last month for talks on a compact with the tribe, six members of which appeared at the Hauppauge meeting Thursday.

Owners of the Calverton property, speaking at a Suffolk Legislature Gaming Task Force meeting in Hauppauge Thursday, said the site had undergone zoning, environmental and other needed reviews, making it "shovel ready." The owners, at the Engel Burman Group of Garden City, said they would lease or sell the property for an undisclosed sum, and could develop it for the tribe. Lance Gumbs, a senior Shinnecock trustee, said the tribe would consider it among others. It would base its decision on its feasibility studies and reception from residents.

"We're evaluating them all," Gumbs said.

Jan Burman, whose family owns the Calverton parcel at Engel Burman, pitched the site as "probably one of the only sites you could walk into tomorrow, submit your plans and get going." Environmental and other reviews have been completed, and utility services and roads are in place, according to Burman. He broached the notion of a Long Island Expressway off-ramp specifically for the site to address tribal concerns the site is not easily accessible.

At the same forum, John Paulson, a Shirley resident, unloaded on the Suffolk task force about the Brookhaven airport's inclusion on the site list. He said access to it is limited and in the middle of communities, but Gumbs said casinos as nearby as Foxwoods don't suffer from traffic woes.

Connecticut casinos Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods have seen average daily traffic on nearby roads nearly double in the 18 years since they opened, according to 2005 data from the Southeastern Connecticut Council of Governments, a planning consortium.

Gumbs said in his years of visiting Foxwoods, "I've never seen a traffic jam on the road."

Yet on the radio last night, the locations for the casino were supposed to be over by the Nassau Colusium or Calabro airport in Shirley. As far as the Walmart, they always seem to win. Communities be damned. I just don't get it.
